Information technology proactively solves all aviation industry problems

VietNamNetVietNamNet20/09/2023

At the 2023 World Aviation Safety and Operations Conference organized by the Ministry of Transport and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) from September 19-21, Mr. Willie Walsh, IATA Director General shared: "Safety is the top priority of the aviation industry".

However, in reality, many major airports in Asia-Pacific are seriously overloaded, leading to many consequences: Airlines are having difficulty increasing passenger service capacity, increasing flight delays, and increasing costs for airlines and passengers.

In Vietnam, the two main airports (Noi Bai Airport and Tan Son Nhat Airport) are also often overloaded during peak seasons.

Mr. Le Hong Ha (sitting in the middle) shared at a press conference on the sidelines of the 2023 World Aviation Safety and Operations Conference.

Key solutions to address terminal congestion, experts say, include automation, biometric technology, online self-service, etc.

Accordingly, airlines and airports need to have a higher level of collaboration. Real-time cross-functional data sharing and the willingness to share data within and between organizations are also key to minimizing operational challenges.

Sharing more about the need for cooperation focusing on the application of information technology in the aviation sector, Mr. Le Hong Ha, General Director of Vietnam Airlines (VNA) gave an example at the airline.

Specifically, there were times when the lack of replacement parts put VNA in a difficult situation, with some parts taking a year or more to produce.

This has led to planes being “laid out” for repairs because planes cannot fly without engines. But in reality, VNA still has many engines in the workshop without an exact repair completion date, and the workshop’s repair time has now doubled, even tripled.

In addition, VNA also has a long list of engines waiting to be repaired. Finding a source to lease engines at a reasonable price now seems impossible. That is why VNA cannot make full use of the aircraft it has.

The cause of this situation, according to VNA representative, is due to poor inventory management; lack of labor; disrupted logistics; hyperinflation; stronger monopoly in the aviation industry...

“Machines are a big deal in the aviation industry. I think the most important thing is to be able to forecast. If we have a good forecasting model, we have accurate information.

Accordingly, it is necessary to improve demand forecasting capabilities. Because accurate demand forecasting is important to prevent stockouts or overstocking. The aviation industry experiences fluctuations in demand due to many factors such as seasonality, fleet expansion or retirement as well as unexpected events such as Covid-19….

Deploying robust predictive models and using real-time data can help improve accuracy. This requires collecting accurate information from airlines in a timely manner.

Therefore, it is important to have intervention for airlines, suppliers, MROs and manufacturers in the input of information. Increasing visibility through technologies such as IoT, Blockchain and data analytics can improve collaboration and enable proactive problem solving,” Mr. Ha emphasized.

Passengers are increasingly served better on every flight.

Experts assess that in the coming years, the aviation industry is ripe for innovation and growth. Accordingly, the industry's transformation to digitalization, including artificial intelligence (AI)-based analytics, data-driven decision-making and personalized passenger experiences is a major opportunity.

Therefore, IATA representatives recommend that airlines need to exploit data to optimize routes, increase operational efficiency and improve customer journeys to gain a competitive advantage.

At the same time, IT is being used to enhance the passenger experience. There is a growing demand for improved passenger experiences, from more comfortable seats and better in-flight entertainment to streamlined booking and check-in processes.

“Airlines that focus on creating a more enjoyable and convenient journey for travelers have an opportunity to stand out. In particular, leveraging data and artificial intelligence (AI) means airlines can provide personalized travel experiences tailored to individual preferences, from seat selection to in-flight meal options,” IATA representatives recommended.
