DNVN - Mr. Do Duong Hien - an expert from ChildFund Vietnam, said that AI brings many benefits but also poses many potential risks to children on the internet.
Speaking at the workshop “Promoting cooperation in protecting children in the online environment” organized by the Vietnam Information Security Association in collaboration with the Department of Information Security (Ministry of Information and Communications) on November 21 in Hanoi, experts said that in the context of digital technologies developing strongly and becoming an indispensable working and entertainment tool in the daily life of each person, risks to information safety, security, and privacy are also increasing.
For children, these dangers and risks become even more evident when they do not have enough skills to identify and avoid them. These are challenges not only for Vietnam but also for many other countries in the world. Therefore, protecting children and enhancing cooperation and connection in cyberspace to protect and empower children are also issues raised globally.
Mr. Dang Vu Son - Vice President of VNISA.
Mr. Dang Vu Son - Vice President of VNISA, Former Head of the Government Cipher Committee said: In that context, the program "Protecting and supporting children to interact healthily and creatively in the online environment in the period of 2021 - 2025" has created a driving force to promote active participation from state agencies, social organizations and businesses. However, in practice, there are still limitations in connecting and coordinating between relevant parties, significantly affecting the effectiveness of child protection work in cyberspace".
According to Mr. Son, VNISA has been committed to working with state management agencies, international organizations and businesses to implement initiatives to protect children online. In recent times, the Association has carried out many activities.
“We believe that connection and cooperation are the key to solving challenges and bringing greater efficiency in protecting children in cyberspace. VNISA is committed to continuing its efforts and working closely with domestic and foreign partners to build a truly safe and sustainable cyber environment for the young generation,” added Mr. Dang Vu Son.
Sharing about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on children online, Mr. Do Duong Hien - Expert from ChildFund Vietnam said that AI is developing strongly, bringing benefits but also posing many potential risks to children on the internet.
"AI encourages and promotes children's creativity and initiative. Generative AI can provide children with creative tools to express themselves through composition, art and music. AI can help children explore and learn about new fields, expanding their knowledge and skills," Mr. Hien mentioned, while warning about the downside: "That is the problem of producing inappropriate content. AI tools/algorithms of platform providers can provide age-inappropriate and harmful content. In addition, generative AI can be used to create misinformation or fake news that affects children's cognition and behavior as well as their development."
However, AI can also play a role as a tool to protect children and monitor online content. AI has the ability to detect, remove and quickly warn of abusive or inappropriate content on social media and internet platforms. Detect and report child sexual abuse content (CSAM): applications and software support the detection of documents, CSAM content and report or block directly on the system. AI tools can support the detection of violent behavior.
Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh, Vice President of VNISA, Chairman of VCSC Club (third from right).
Talking about the activities of protecting children online in recent times, Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh, Vice President of VNISA, Chairman of VCSC Club said: “The basic standard TCCS:03 VNISA just issued in June 2024 is an important milestone contributing to promoting the ecosystem of products and services to protect children online. This standard also contributes to assessing the quality of products and services to protect children online to help users and parents feel more secure in choosing products and services. This will be a premise to promote the participation of businesses, organizations as well as a large number of users to join hands in protecting their children from dangers and risks in cyberspace”.
Ms. Phan Thi Kim Lien - Child Protection and Child Participation Program Manager, World Vision International in Vietnam, expressed that the digital environment brings countless opportunities as well as risks to children's development. In Vietnam, 9 out of 10 children use the internet. In an effort to build a safe and effective online environment for children, World Vision International in Vietnam focuses on a comprehensive digital skills education program so that children can both know how to protect themselves, use the internet creatively, and be proactive in building a safe and effective internet environment.Nguyen Duc
