Unexpected uses of dong leaves for wrapping banh chung

In addition to being used to wrap banh chung and banh tet, dong leaves are also used as medicine thanks to their sweet taste, slightly cold properties, and light aroma.

According to MSc. Dr. Le Ngo Minh Nhu, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Campus 3, the dong leaf plant is a herbaceous plant about 1 m high, with large, oval leaves, pointed tips, smooth, 35 cm long, 12 cm wide, 22 cm long petiole, of which the upper 2-3 cm is smooth.

Inflorescences are capitulums, sessile, located in the leaf sheath, 4-5 cm in diameter, consisting of 4-5 flowers. Petals are white or red, fruit is ovoid, 11 mm long, seeds are oblong with a 2-bladed seed coat.

Dong leaves can be harvested all year round, but the peak harvest time is near Tet (November-December of the lunar calendar) for the purpose of wrapping Chung cake and Tet cake. When used as medicine, Dong leaves are used fresh.

Dong leaves have a slightly sweet taste, light aroma, and slightly cold properties. The medicinal herb is classified into the Liver meridian. This plant has the effect of clearing heat, detoxifying, diuretic, cooling the liver, and stopping bleeding.

Some remedies from dong leaves

- Used as a hangover remedy: Crush 100-200g of fresh dong leaves, squeeze out the juice and drink directly.

- Dong leaves are used to clear heat and detoxify: Boil 100-200g of fresh dong leaves in 1 liter of water and drink during the day.

- Dong leaves to treat snake bites: Crush a sufficient amount of fresh dong leaves, use the pulp to apply to the snake bite. The patient should be taken to the nearest medical facility for timely treatment.

- Dong leaves to treat wounds: 100g dong leaves, crushed, bandaged on the wound to help stop bleeding.

Notes when using dong leaves to treat diseases

Dong leaf plant has a shape similar to dong ta plant, is a plant with developed tubers and is used as an ingredient to make vermicelli.

In addition, most of the remedies from dong leaves are only passed down among the people, so the effects and the level of improvement in the disease have not been determined. Therefore, in cases of disease using dong leaves to treat diseases, it is necessary to be instructed by a specialist before applying to avoid unfortunate consequences.
