Community participation in preserving cultural values

Việt NamViệt Nam17/01/2025

The subjects of the festival are the community, the village community, the professional community, the religious and belief community, the urban community and, more broadly, the national and ethnic community. The community is the subject that creates, operates, enjoys and preserves the cultural values of the festival.

For generations, the community in Quang Ninh has lived together in a spirit of solidarity, respect for love and loyalty. This tradition is expressed in filial piety to parents and grandparents, respect for teachers, and honoring ancestors who have contributed to the expansion of the homeland. Many places in Quang Ninh have the custom of worshipping ancestors, visiting ancestors, and cleaning graves, and have temples to worship Tien Cong.

Quang Ninh people are also open-minded and free-thinking, so this is a land with many folk festivals of high social and humanistic nature, a message connecting the past and the present. The festivals have solemn rituals and open-minded, joyful festivities that help people connect with each other.

In Quang Ninh, the community participating in the festival also includes a large number of tourists. In that sense, festival activities are community cultural activities, not only the community activities of the local people but also of tourists from many other regions. Therefore, immersing in the festival atmosphere means that tourists have experienced and been passed on cultural values. Therefore, the nature of conservation is already present in that activity.

At festivals in Quang Ninh, traditional games such as boat racing, processions, and folk customs associated with festivals also need to be spread, so that tourists can experience them directly. Immersing in these forms of performance, the person experiencing them is not only a tourist, but also a real citizen, a member of the community that has the festival... This will stimulate and create attraction for tourists when they immerse themselves in the festival atmosphere.

The participation of the tourist community will also create connections between festivals, including festivals in the Yen Tu area. Prof. Dr. Le Hong Ly, Chairman of the Vietnam Folk Arts Association, said that folk festivals represent the richness of the Yen Tu cultural space. According to the space of the Yen Tu range, folk festivals in this area do not only belong to the Yen Tu area, but are also a system of festivals throughout the Yen Tu range, passing through the provinces of Hai Duong, Bac Giang and Quang Ninh. Therefore, folk festivals as well as other types do not stop at one point but spread over a large space and have connections between places to form a very attractive spiritual cultural space. Moreover, these festivals are not just religious festivals but many folk festivals take place around the area, to create an attractive cultural and religious space. Particularly in Quang Ninh, festivals can be mentioned such as: An Sinh Temple Festival, festivals of villages along the Yen Tu range. Connected with the festivals along Yen Tu range are many other festivals related to the Tran Dynasty in Quang Ninh such as: Bach Dang Festival, Duc Ong Temple Festival, Cua Ong Temple Festival, Van Don Festival...

In addition to preserving traditional festivals, Quang Ninh also builds and maintains many modern festivals that have been welcomed by local residents and tourists. According to cultural researchers, modern festivals are an opportunity to promote the potential strengths of socio-economic development achievements, promote the culture of Quang Ninh people in particular, and Vietnam in general. The recent Cherry Blossom Festival or Hokkaido Festival are typical examples of strengthening diplomatic relations between Vietnam and countries around the world, including people-to-people diplomacy, through festival cultural activities. This will be a future model for many similar cultural activities, showing the convergence and diffusion of Quang Ninh. Not only connecting with Hai Phong, Bac Giang, Hai Duong, but also to other regions in the country and beyond the border.
