When arriving at the scene to investigate, the police identified the victim as Ms. NTHC (31 years old, from Tien Giang), the stolen property was a Sh Mode motorbike and 2 million VND.
Determining the nature of the incident, the Board of Directors of Ho Chi Minh City Police reported to the leaders of the Ministry of Public Security and the City Party Committee, Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, and at the same time directed the Criminal Police Department to establish a special project, concentrate forces and equipment, coordinate with Hoc Mon District Police, the Mobile Police Regiment and related units to urgently investigate and, at all costs, arrest the perpetrator in the fastest time.
Using professional measures, after only 9 hours of investigation, the Task Force identified the perpetrator as Nguyen Thanh Tam (27 years old, residing in Tan Phu Trung, Cu Chi District). However, Tam had moved through many places in Ho Chi Minh City and hid in the acacia forest in Hamlet 7, Luong Hoa Commune, Ben Luc District, Long An Province to avoid being arrested by the police.
It is worth mentioning that the terrain where the subject was hiding was very large, about 50 hectares, bordering the river. However, all officers and soldiers participating in the pursuit were persistent, meticulously checking and searching every square meter, determined not to let the subject escape.
The task force mobilized 1,000 officers and soldiers along with many modern equipment and police dogs. After 72 hours of searching, the task force arrested Nguyen Thanh Tam and seized all evidence related to the case.
The subject was then extradited from Long An to Ho Chi Minh City for further investigation and clarification.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thanh Hung - Head of the Criminal Police Department, Ho Chi Minh City Police said that the subject Tam is being sought by the Duc Hoa District Police and Long An District Police for the act of "Abuse of trust to appropriate property" but the subject has fled.
Lieutenant Colonel Hung added that on January 6, Tam went to a barbershop in Tan Thoi Nhi Commune, Hoc Mon District to rob, but because he determined that there was not much property there, he gave up the idea. After that, Tam went to a coffee shop along Highway 22 and committed the murder and robbery.
Lieutenant Colonel Hung emphasized: "We must capture Tam as quickly as possible, because he is a very dangerous subject. If he escapes, he will likely continue to commit serious crimes, endangering the people."
The head of the Criminal Police Department represented the Ho Chi Minh City Police to thank local residents for helping the police capture the suspect. Residents prepared loaves of bread, lit fires for the force to warm up, and even used motorbikes to transport the force to perform their duties.
Lieutenant Colonel Doi Ngoc Thang - Deputy Head of the Criminal Police Department said: "The victim was brutally attacked, slashed more than 40 times. In investigating the suspect, we initially only approached one witness, but this person said he only heard the sound of a car coming from the coffee shop. However, through professional measures, we identified the suspect as Nguyen Thanh Tam, and at the same time narrowed down the area where the suspect was hiding in Luong Hoa commune, Ben Luc district, Long An province.
This is a 50-hectare forest with lots of snakes and centipedes. We surrounded the entire area with 40 checkpoints, making sure the suspect could not escape. On the evening of January 6, in addition to using sniffer dogs, we also used 6 Flycams to track the suspect.
During the pursuit, 10 officers and soldiers had to be hospitalized because of wasp stings.
Lieutenant Colonel Doi Ngoc Thang also revealed that the force had to use motor vehicles to clear the way. "There were Flycams in the sky, and police, people and police dogs below. On the morning of January 9, the force at the scene used 5 excavators divided into 5 groups to enter the forest. The subject Tam was lying in the ditch, covering the surface with grass. When he saw the excavator approaching, Tam was afraid of being crushed by the excavator, so he got up and ran away and was arrested.
The subject admitted to all his actions. Tam confessed that during his days on the run, he ate guava, bananas and drank coconut water picked in the forest," Lieutenant Colonel Thang said.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Thang, it is not yet known whether Tam has any accomplices. His motive was to prepare weapons to attack and rob the victim. If the victim resists, he will kill him.
As reported, at noon on January 6, people heard cries for help coming from a coffee shop along Highway 22 in Xuan Thoi Son Commune, Hoc Mon District. When they arrived, they saw a young man, later identified as suspect Le Thanh Tam, get on a motorbike and escape.
Going inside to check, people discovered the female employee of the restaurant, NTNP (22 years old), lying gasping for breath with many stab wounds on her body. People took Ms. P. to the emergency room but she died.
Upon receiving the news, Hoc Mon District Police and Ho Chi Minh City Police Department urgently investigated and identified the suspect, Le Thanh Tam, who was fleeing towards Long An.
Ho Chi Minh City police coordinated with Long An province police to set up checkpoints at many locations, following Tam's trail.
At 10am on January 9, the police arrested Tam.
