Humans age significantly at two key times in their lives.

In the study published in the journal Nature Aging, scientists at Stanford University and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore observed aging changes in the molecules of 108 people, including RNA, proteins and the microbiome.

Scientists have discovered that human aging does not occur in a gradual, linear manner. Instead, most of the molecules they studied showed a sudden acceleration of aging between the ages of 44 and 60.

Research on aging human beings is based on these two important points in life cycle 1.

The results suggest that “we do not age gradually,” according to Xiaotao Shen, associate professor of microbial medicine at Nanyang Technological University and first author of the study. He added that certain moments are particularly important for our aging and health.

For example, the ability to metabolize caffeine declines significantly between the ages of 40 and 60. Components involved in alcohol metabolism also decline, especially in the 40s, explains Michael Snyder, chair of genetics at Stanford University and an author of the study.

Snyder adds that, anecdotally, “people often have muscle injuries and see fat accumulation in their 40s (related to lipid metabolism), and certainly muscle atrophy (muscle loss) occurs in people in their 60s. This is a huge problem.”

He added that both age groups experience changes in the proteins that hold tissues together, which may help explain the changes in the skin, muscles and cardiovascular system.

The risk also increases more rapidly, especially after age 60. Research has found that people aged 60 and over are more likely to develop cardiovascular disorders, kidney problems and type 2 diabetes.

Since accelerated aging in women can be attributed to menopause (usually between the ages of 45 and 55), the researchers conducted separate analyses on male and female datasets. They were surprised to find similar results—suggesting that accelerated aging around age 55 may be a common phenomenon in both sexes.

A previous study by German and American researchers found that there is another "wave" of aging around age 75, but the latest study could not confirm those findings because the age range of the test subjects was only 25 to 75.

The team's findings suggest lifestyle changes such as drinking less alcohol and exercising more should be made as people enter the crucial years of their 40s and 60s.

Snyder advises those approaching 60 to watch their carbohydrate intake and drink plenty of water to support kidney function. Shen urges, “Take extra care of yourself at certain times in your life.”
