The flowing sounds of the peaceful breath of the canals, the cajuput trees, the boats, the moonlight and the singing voices of the song “The Green Canal” were written by musician Ngo Huynh during his days in the Southern resistance zone when he was only 18 years old. Later, when recalling the birth of the song, the author said: “I wrote about the green canal, about the sons and daughters of the rustic, hard-working, honest land of Thap Muoi, who lived and thought honestly but had built up glorious feats of arms to defend the village, defend the land, defend every blade of grass of the beloved Southern homeland”.

Musician Ngo Huynh's birth name is Huynh Tan Chu, born on December 31, 1931. Hometown is Saigon.

Musician Ngo Huynh joined the revolution in 1947 and became a propagandist. At the end of 1950, he joined the army and worked in Battalion 307. In 1954, after the Geneva Accords, like many other Southerners, musician Ngo Huynh gathered in the North and worked on music in the Vietnam Film Studio. He was sent to study in Alma-Ata. After graduating there, musician Ngo Huynh returned to Vietnam and worked at the Vietnam Song and Dance Troupe and the Institute of Music Research. After April 30, 1975, he worked at the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association until his death in 1993. Musician Ngo Huynh was the author of a number of popular songs such as: "Con kenh xanh xanh", "Tro lai kenh xanh", "Me toi", "Thanh pho va ngoai o"...

In 2005, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the country, the People's Committee of Dong Thap province posthumously awarded musician Ngo Huynh and a number of musicians, poets, photographers and composers a special award named after patriot Le Quang Dieu.

According to journalist Nguyen Thai Tung: “Listening to “The Green Canal”, it is easy to feel close to us when listening to “My Village” by Van Cao, “My Hometown in the Central Highlands” by Nguyen Duc Toan. There is something full of love like the soul of the countryside, the warm love of the countryside in our hearts. There is something that touches the deep roots of the Vietnamese soul. Perhaps that is why “The Green Canal” by musician Ngo Huynh has been and will be preserved forever”.

In the memoir “Returning to the old battlefield” by writer Pham Tuong Hanh, an old friend of Ngo Huynh during the resistance war against the French, he wrote: “I know that the song “Con kenh xanh xanh” was born at a time when no one called Ngo Huynh a musician and perhaps he himself could not have thought that he would dedicate his whole life to music. The song was born with his heart for the country, with an open soul for his homeland. Since then, on his career path, he has achieved success in many other songs, but the song “Con kenh xanh xanh” has entered the hearts of people from the South to the North and lives forever in the souls of successive generations to this day.”

Vu Duy Thao from Toan My village, Voi town, Lang Giang, Bac Giang participated in the section "You love music, comment on music" in 2001 about the song "Green Canal" and wrote: "With the gentle, passionate melody in the lyrics, the song opens up a poetic, affectionate scene of rivers and beautiful fields on a peaceful afternoon... The brilliant beauty of the canal is even more prominent on clear moonlit nights with cool breezes when we sit on a windy boat, drifting along the canal...".

The feelings that musician Ngo Huynh put into the song are deep feelings of love for the countryside: There is the intoxicating scent of kitchen smoke, the gentle scent of lotus, the dreamy fragrance of the golden rice fields spreading out... Just that alone makes our hearts feel filled with a feeling of abundance and prosperity... And here: In the midst of that peaceful, poetic scene, suddenly a melancholy singing voice seems to evoke in us memories of a time gone by, sacred memories of humanity, camaraderie...

With his subtle creativity, using Southern folk music, musician Ngo Huynh has poured all his heart into the song “Green Canal”. The song was written with a passionate heart, and passionate blood about the heroic revolutionary history of our nation, of the resilient Dong Thap Muoi, the Fatherland’s citadel.

The song has ended, but the lingering, lingering, wistful echoes still linger in my mind... In my own dream, I see again: The green canal... moonlight... lotus flowers and the proud and passionate lyrics: "Oh green canal! The seasons of fierce fighting. Together we build a beautiful love song".

Also participating in the section “You love music, comment on music” in 2001, Mr. Hoang Ngoc Khuyen in Zone 3, Diem Dien town, Thai Thuy, Thai Binh, in his letter to comment on the song “Con kenh xanh xanh” wrote: “I am 60 years old this year, and have never set foot on the land of the South, but for more than 40 years I have been close to and attached to the swamps and seas of the South thanks to the famous song “Con kenh xanh xanh” by musician Ngo Huynh. The song is not long or elaborate, but it is truly a picture, a film depicting the arduous but heroic water war zone of the South. Moreover, it is also a heroic musical epic depicting the portrait of the indomitable people of the South who rose up to fight the enemy to defend their homeland with any weapon they had.

In the South, canals are the main traffic routes, through the canals people see the vitality of a countryside. In Ngo Huynh's "Green Canal" we see the beauty of the war zone, see the leisurely and carefree, see the optimism and trust in the sacred resistance of the nation.

Along the resistance canal, we hear the echoes of cheers and the bustling sound of pounding the palm. We see with our own eyes the silhouettes of boats gliding through the night, the swaying rows of cajuput trees... All of these scenes lead to the bright spot and expectation of the people of the South: "The war zone lights up, warming the hearts of our countrymen". Thank you, soldier-musician Ngo Huynh, for creating the immortal "Green Canal". It can be said without exaggeration: A resistance song that you can listen to for a lifetime without getting bored!"
