On October 27, Ms. Peatongtarn Shinawatra - the youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra - was elected as the new leader of the Pheu Thai Party (For Thailand), the party leading the current ruling coalition in Thailand.
Ms. Paetongtarn (37 years old) was voted in a meeting of the Pheu Thai Executive Committee and key members of the party at the party headquarters in Bangkok on the morning of October 27.
Ms. Paetongtarn's father, former Prime Minister Thaksin, was the founder of the Pheu Thai Party, so her selection for the leadership position is not surprising. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is also expected to attend this meeting on the afternoon of October 27.
The new president of the Pheu Thai Party entered politics two years ago as the party’s chief adviser on reform. She was also one of the party’s three prime ministerial candidates in the May election.
Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said he supported Paetongtarn as the next party leader because of her ability, not her family background. According to the official, appointing Paetongtarn as Pheu Thai leader will pave the way for the younger generation of Thailand to join the party.
