Tourists swim in the coastal town of Riomaggiore near the road of love
Dubbed one of the most romantic walking streets in the world, Via dell'Amore (the road of love) in Italy officially reopened today, July 27, after a long period of renovation with an investment of about 26 million USD, according to CNN citing information from the Italian Ministry of Tourism.
The 900-meter-long sea-view road runs between the small towns of Riomaggiore and Manarola. It is located in northern Liguria, the heart of the natural paradise of Cinque Terre, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
The route has been closed since September 2012 after a landslide injured four Australian tourists.
According to the Italian Ministry of Tourism, reopening the road was complicated by its fragile cliffside location. It was an engineering challenge because of its precarious position deep in the rock between the sky and the sea.
Renovation work began on January 14, 2022 and was completed on July 19.
Road renovation took a long time due to its precarious location.
Specialized companies worked on site, using helicopters to transport materials. Climbers moved equipment up the cliff while hanging from ropes and cables attached to special anchors.
The total investment for the project is about 26 million USD, divided equally among several related ministries. The road will be managed by the Riomaggiore government and considered an open-air museum.
From 27.7 to 8.8, this road is only open to residents of Cinque Terre, Levanto, La Spezia and former residents as well as owners of second homes in Riomaggiore and their families.
From August 9, the love road will be open to all visitors but reservations must be made in advance on the website www.viadellamore.info which is under construction, as well as a fee of 10 euros and a guide will be provided.
The road will be limited to 400 people per hour, divided into groups of 100 every 15 minutes, according to the Riomaggiore regional government. Visitors will only be able to visit the road in one direction from Riomaggiore to Manarola. Last year, the Riomaggiore region welcomed 4 million visitors.
