On June 1, the Department of Telecommunications (Ministry of Information and Communications) said that according to reports from network operators, by the end of May, 4/5 international submarine fiber optic cable lines that had problems in the past had been repaired, restoring transmission channels on the lines, including: IA, SMW-3, AAE-1, AAG.
It is expected that in June, the last submarine fiber optic cable will be repaired.
Of which, the international submarine cable AAG, which accounts for the majority of internet connection capacity from Vietnam to international destinations, has restored all capacity on the line in the last week of May. The last line, APG, is expected to be restored in June.
According to experts, once the four submarine cables IA, SMW3, AAE-1 and AAG are repaired and restored to normal operation, the quality of Vietnam's internet services will improve due to more connection options and better latency as when traffic runs mostly through land cables. Network operators will also be more flexible in directing traffic, ensuring service quality and customer experience.
In the coming time, the Ministry of Information and Communications will urge and guide telecommunications enterprises to research and build 4-6 new submarine optical cable lines to ensure meeting demand, in accordance with the draft Information and Communications Infrastructure Planning for the 2021-2030 period.
It is expected that by 2025, Vietnamese enterprises will use about 10 submarine optical cable lines. The operation of new submarine optical cable lines will contribute to adding capacity, to solve the need for international internet connection.
Although the time to prepare for investment and deploy a submarine fiber optic cable often takes many years, investing in infrastructure is extremely important to ensure the operation of the rapid increase of IoT devices and digital transformation in the coming time.
Previously, Vietnam's current submarine optical cable lines (accounting for 99% of domestic to international traffic) included AAE-1 (faulty since late November 2022), APG (faulty since December 2022), AAG (faulty since January 2023), IA (faulty since late January 2023).
By February 2023, the "oldest" submarine cable, SMW-3, had a problem, marking the first time all five of Vietnam's cross-sea connections had problems.
