The incident stemmed from a revelation by The Atlantic , when Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg said he was accidentally added to a chat group on the messaging service Signal, where senior US government officials discussed attacks on Houthi forces in Yemen.

According to The Atlantic , Mr. Goldberg received an invitation to join Signal from an account named "Mike Waltz" on March 11. He was then unexpectedly added to a chat group called the "Houthi PC small group" with important officials such as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance. Over the next few days, officials in the group had important policy discussions.

On March 15, an account called “Pete Hegseth” posted a message containing sensitive details about the upcoming airstrikes, including the targets, types of weapons, and expected time of attack. Significantly, Goldberg said, this time coincided with the first posts about the airstrikes appearing on social media.

According to AFP , on March 25, US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz "took full responsibility" for the error in the above information leak.

"I take full responsibility. I created this group chat, my job was to make sure everything was coordinated," Waltz told Fox News , noting that he did not know Goldberg.

The US National Security Adviser confirmed that the government will investigate how Mr. Goldberg was able to access this secret chat group.

On March 24, the White House admitted that Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg was included in the chat group, but claimed that the scandal was just an attempt to distract attention from the successes of US President Donald Trump.

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung called it "a well-worn tactic" used by political opponents against Mr Trump, stating: "The anti-Trump forces are trying to weaponize harmless actions and turn them into fake outrage that fake news channels can use to spread disinformation."

Speaking about this incident, President Trump affirmed his complete trust in the national security team: "That man (Mike Waltz) is a very good man and he will continue to do his job well", and affirmed: "Our national security is now stronger than ever".

Meanwhile, on the Democratic side, party leader Chuck Schumer called for a full investigation and said: "This is one of the most serious breaches of military intelligence that I have read about in a very, very long time."
