Tet is the longest holiday for rest and indulgence. People tend to consume more alcohol, sugary drinks, high-protein foods, and become less active, increasing their risk of illness.
Dr. Nguyen Van Thanh, from the Department of Gastroenterology, Hanoi Medical University, stated that consuming too much food overwhelms the liver and kidneys, leading to a buildup of toxins. Therefore, detoxification and energy replenishment are necessary, and the safest way to do this is through diet.
First, everyone needs to quickly re-establish a healthy diet, especially those with hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, dyslipidemia, kidney disease, and those who are overweight or obese. Limit your intake of sugar, sweets, and fried foods that cause bloating and indigestion, which can increase blood sugar and cause dyslipidemia. Limit carbonated drinks and alcoholic beverages, or consume them in small amounts, to avoid overindulgence.
Eating too much protein-rich food like meat, fish, eggs, and dairy can also harm the kidneys, so it should be reduced. Drink enough water and eat more fresh fruit and yogurt to reduce bloating and indigestion.
Eat plenty of green vegetables (240-320 g/day) and ripe fruits (240 g/day). People who are overweight, obese, have blood glucose disorders, or diabetes should limit their intake of sweet, high-energy ripe fruits such as bananas, mangoes, jackfruit, and lychees.
Avoid snacking in the evening. Do not eat cakes, jams, or sweets. Reduce consumption of salty foods such as pickled vegetables. Consume no more than 5 grams of salt per day.
After the Lunar New Year, it's a good idea to restart your daily exercise routine. Dr. Nguyen Huy Hoang, from the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center, Ministry of National Defense , recommends that everyone should exercise at a moderate intensity for at least 150 minutes per week. Healthy individuals should walk three kilometers or more daily, then gradually increase the intensity of their workouts. You can do light exercise, jogging, swimming, yoga, or meditation, depending on your preference.
Individuals with chronic illnesses or health problems should consult a doctor for appropriate and safe exercise regimens. For example, older adults should do gentle exercises indoors, in a sheltered area, or if going outdoors, they should wear a hat, warm clothing, a scarf, and gloves.
People need to keep their bodies and respiratory tracts warm to avoid catching a cold and reduce the risk of respiratory infections such as the flu.
Doctors advise people not to trust detoxification products widely available online, as this can easily harm and poison the body. Avoid detoxification methods such as rectal manipulation or colon cleansing. Do not overuse herbal remedies or excessive steam baths.
Returning to work after the Lunar New Year holiday, everyone needs to maintain a relaxed state of mind, reduce stress, and get enough sleep to stay healthy. Limit stimulants, tobacco, alcohol, and beer. Get a health check-up every six months.
