The information was shared in the online consultation program "Choosing a major for the future: New trends in engineering and industry" yesterday afternoon (April 9), taking place on the channels: thanhnien.vn , Facebook.com/thanhnien , YouTube and TikTok Thanh Nien Newspaper.
NUMBER OF ENROLLMENT IS NOT LARGE
Sharing in the program, Dr. Vo Thanh Hai, Vice Principal of Duy Tan University, said that according to the list of level IV training majors of the Ministry of Education and Training, in 24 fields with 377 majors, there are 2 fields related to engineering including: engineering, engineering technology with 57 training majors. In addition to these specific training majors, engineering factors are also in other fields such as: life sciences, environmental groups, etc.
However, Dr. Hai said that according to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training on the number of candidates admitted to university in 2023, out of a total of nearly 547,000 candidates admitted, only about 84,000 students studied engineering technology. Of which, the engineering field ranked 7th with 4.9% and the engineering technology field ranked 3rd with 10.5%. "From the above data, it can be said that the two fields related to engineering have a fairly large number of training majors in the entire list of university majors, but the number of candidates admitted to these majors is not large," Dr. Hai said.
Much necessary information about the technical sector was shared by experts in a consulting program at Thanh Nien Newspaper yesterday afternoon, April 9.
Explaining part of the reason, the Vice President of Duy Tan University said: "To study engineering technology, natural science knowledge is considered the foundation. This is shown not only through the entrance exam combinations but also in the university curriculum. However, in recent years, when registering for the selection exam for graduation recognition, the number of candidates choosing the natural science exam has tended to decrease. This is one of the reasons leading to the fact that the number of candidates passing the engineering majors in recent years."
HIGH AND STABLE JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Sharing the same perspective, Dr. Nguyen Trung Nhan, Head of Training Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry, expressed his concern: "It is a matter of concern if the trend of students choosing social sciences is increasing because students with strengths in social sciences cannot study engineering and technology. In the long run, not having a strong production force in the economy will be something to think about."
Dr. Nhan added: "At the time we were in university, the admission scores for many engineering and technology majors were much higher than for other majors. But in the past decade, the number of candidates registering has gradually decreased and the admission scores are also lower than for some other fields."
According to Dr. Trung Nhan, engineering technology was born very early and is considered a core industry in the development of industrialization and modernization. Because of its core, the labor force in this field is currently very large in society, and employment is always stable. "I affirm that students who study engineering technology can easily find jobs, and job stability is very high. Not only in the country, many countries in the world also lack engineers, so there is a need to recruit from Vietnam. Exporting labor to many countries in the field of engineering technology is very easy," Mr. Nhan added.
In Vietnam, Mr. Nhan said that the government and universities currently have many incentive policies to attract students to study engineering. In 2023, the rate of candidates registering for engineering will be slightly higher, which is a good sign to further balance the labor market between professions.

K ESSENTIAL SKILLS FOR TECHNICAL LEARNERS
In the program, experts also agreed that engineering is a field that not everyone can study. To study well, students need a foundation of knowledge from natural subjects, especially math and physics.
"During the university process, the school must test the math knowledge of engineering students, and increase the teaching of physics and chemistry knowledge to students in the courses. Along with solid professional knowledge, students who have good foreign languages after graduation will have the best job opportunities," said Dr. Vo Thanh Hai.
Sharing more about the skill set that future engineers need to have, Master Nguyen Hoang Thien Thu, representative of Vietnam-Germany University, said that the first is social skills that help engineers communicate, interact and work with other individuals. In terms of language skills, the first necessity is English to be able to read, interpret and take notes on technical documents in English. In addition, learners need to be well-equipped with programming languages, equipped with lifelong learning skills and always be "curious" when facing technical problems.
NEW TRENDS IN TRAINING
According to Master Thien Thu, universities are currently training engineering according to three new trends: interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary training, digitalization and green transformation. "Today's engineers not only need to be specialized in one field but also need to understand many fields, especially in the trend of creating many new engineering fields that integrate non-technical factors. These are also "green" skills, so that in addition to handling technical problems, they also need to care about protecting the living environment. Therefore, in the near future, "green" skills can be included in teaching in engineering fields in the future," Master Thien Thu added.
As for women, Master Thien Thu revealed: "With meticulous and meticulous qualities, women are considered very suitable for some jobs in the technical field. Currently, there are large corporations in the world that only announce recruitment for women, not men, for these technical positions."
Does artificial intelligence affect engineering jobs?
"There is no shortage of jobs in the future of the technology industry, but there are still risks due to the rapid and profound development of artificial intelligence. If you are not better and more meticulous, the number of jobs will gradually decrease. However, if you are truly passionate, the opportunity will never end."

Note when applying
Candidates who follow the "safe and secure" strategy tend to choose the early admission method, along with candidates who want to conquer the path to university through the high school graduation exam. For each choice, candidates need to carefully research and refer to the benchmark scores of previous years to be able to pass the highest. For example, the information technology major at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology has a continuously increasing benchmark score every year. Candidates need to study the proportion of quotas according to each method. For methods with multiple rounds of consideration, they should take advantage of the first rounds to increase their chances of passing.

Essential factors when choosing a major
The most important thing for candidates is to choose a major that suits their interests and abilities. They should not follow trends because in reality, there are majors that are mentioned a lot with high scores but after a few years, they may not be "hot" anymore. Therefore, the choice needs to be based on careful reflection on the factors of interest and suitability. To avoid the situation where after being admitted to university, they realize that it is not suitable, which will waste time.
