'In my journey with cinema, I have experienced both the mountains and the sea. Through my trips, I retain those experiences. And the same goes for when I paint...' - People's Artist Tra Giang shared with Tuoi Tre Online.

On the evening of October 20, the exhibition with the theme Homeland by People's Artist Tra Giang opened at Maii Art Space. This is her fourth solo exhibition after Summer Returns (2006), Spring (2016), and Passing Through the Northwest (2018).
25 oil paintings of various sizes are on display at the exhibition at Maii Art Space (72/7 Tran Quoc Toan, Ward 8, District 3, HCMC) from October 20 to 30.
Painting is as 'going up the mountain and down the sea' as cinema
Confiding to Tuoi Tre Online , Tra Giang said that her painting path was influenced by cinema. When painting, she realized that the composition in the painting was similar to the movements in cinema.
"The art of cinema and painting both 'permeate' me. During my journey with cinema, I have experienced both going up the mountains and down the sea. Through my trips, I retain those experiences. And when I paint, it's the same..." - Tra Giang said with a smile.
Tra Giang started painting around the beginning of 1999, by chance. But at the end of 1999, when her husband - Professor Nguyen Bich Ngoc - passed away, painting became almost a choice for her spiritual refuge.
Many of the paintings on display at the exhibition are set in the sea. Tra Giang told Tuoi Tre Online that those scenes are also her hometown of Binh Thuan:
"To me, my homeland is something dear and emotional. These paintings also partly express my indescribable feelings for my homeland."
Overcoming the waves
Tra Giang is just a painter...
The main theme that covers and runs through Tra Giang's paintings is flowers and the landscape of Vietnam. But it is not simply a scene, but also a mixture of moods and silences.
The colors are not merely on the surface, but move with the inner nuances. And on that landscape, the fate of a small human being is faintly visible.

Tra Giang always considers herself a painter, not an artist. At the opening ceremony of the exhibition, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City - expressed her thoughts on Tra Giang's work:
"People's Artist Tra Giang is modest when she does not consider herself a painter, but I think the art world has recognized her as a painter for a long time. Her paintings contain beautiful moments that she encountered on her journey through regions across the country.
Tra Giang's spiritual residence is also where she will see the admiration and love of the audience for an artist of the 'golden generation' of Vietnamese art.

Dr. Ma Thanh Cao, former director of the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, commented that Tra Giang is a person who studies hard, reads and watches a lot, and more importantly, has great passion:
"Drawing landscapes and flowers seems easy but in fact it is not easy, because without high technique, it is impossible to express the gentle atmosphere of flowers and plants. To express the gentleness, the shapes and colors must be stronger."
