For more than 20 years of volunteering, physician Muoi Cam (Thanh Loi commune, Ben Luc district) has helped many people recover from illness. Thanks to him, Thanh Loi market operates every Thursday.

Physician Muoi Cam was born in 1956, his real name is Duong Van Cam. He is the son of Vietnamese Heroic Mother Ly Thi De and has 3 brothers who are martyrs. Since childhood, he has been instilled with the revolutionary tradition of his family. He used to work at the Political Department, Ben Luc District Police.

At the age of 27, he began to learn and study medicine. Martial artist and physician Nguyen Son was the one who discovered and nurtured his talent and medical ethics. Physician Muoi Cam shared: “I vowed to myself that if my father lived to be 80 years old, I would open a charity clinic . At the age of 81, my father passed away, and after his 21-day funeral, I fulfilled that promise. That was around the year 2000.”

The pharmacy is located near the Thanh Loi Commune People's Committee headquarters. At first, he used his own money to buy medicine, and opened the clinic every Thursday. Gradually, more people knew about it, and the clinic's activities expanded. He cooperated with his sister and the staff of the Commune Health Station to do it all. Each time, he took the pulse and prescribed medicine for 700-800 patients.

Philanthropists from all over saw the significance of his work and bought medicine to support him. People lined up on the road in front of the pharmacy, and a few merchants brought food and agricultural products to sell. Gradually, a small market was formed here that still exists today, and people called it the Oriental Medicine Market or Thursday Market. The reputation of physician Muoi Cam spread far and wide thanks in part to these merchants. They spread his good news throughout the towns and villages, so more and more people came to get treatment.

Sometimes he works without eating or resting because he can't bear to see patients having to sit and wait. He has worked for decades without a salary, life is still difficult, but he still tries to maintain the pharmacy.

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, he closed his pharmacy to ensure safety. Although the clinic has not reopened yet, he still helps patients when they come to his house. If the patient is poor and has difficulty traveling, he drives his motorbike to their home. Many times he has gone to border communes to treat patients, the roads are far away but he only takes enough money to buy gas.

Physician Muoi Cam believes: “Although life is sometimes difficult, I do not lose my conscience as a physician. Only those who are sick need me. When they call me and I cannot go, I feel uneasy. The long journey is tiring, but seeing them healthy makes me happy.”

After decades of volunteering without income, all the family burdens were taken care of by his wife, so he loved and admired her very much. He treated people, she was busy with the garden and lemon fields. Yet she never complained because she understood her husband's wishes and the meaning of his work.

One time, someone sent him to buy medicine and they paid, but after the job was done, there was no sign of him. He and his sister had to share the debt of 13 million VND. At that time, he only knew how to "ask for help" from his wife. When we talked to him, she was busy in the kitchen cooking with her grandchildren. Occasionally, he looked at her, and we saw in her eyes endless love and gratitude.

We had the opportunity to wander around the Thursday market and listen to the vendors talk about Doctor Muoi Cam. They said that thanks to him, this market exists, thanks to him, many people have been cured. They also rumored that he is very rich, the richest in the country, but the richness here is not in money but in kindness. That is something that no ruler is long enough to measure, no amount of money can buy./.
