There is a way of exercising that helps the elderly to live a remarkable life.

Everyone knows that exercise has many health benefits, including longevity. But is it better to exercise every day or to exercise once or twice a week?

New research published in the American Heart Association's journal JAHA has found that exercise has a remarkable effect in helping to prolong life.

Scientists from Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China analyzed data from 93,409 participants with an average age of over 62, from the UK Biobank, to explore the association between exercise patterns and the risk of death from all causes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Just 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise on 1-2 days a week can significantly reduce the risk of death from heart disease, cancer or other causes.

Participants wore activity monitors. The authors used the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines as the primary criterion: at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week.

Depending on how they trained during the week, participants were divided into three groups.

  • Weekend warriors (42.6%): Complete 150 minutes of exercise over 1-2 weekend days.
  • Daily exercise group (23.6%): Exercise spread throughout the week.
  • Non-exercise group (33.8%): Did not complete 150 minutes of activity per week.

During a median follow-up of more than 8 years, 3,965 people died, including 667 from cardiovascular disease and 1,780 from cancer.

The results found that compared with the non-exercise group, the weekend warriors and daily exercisers had a significantly lower risk of death from all causes, cardiovascular disease and cancer if they completed 150 minutes of exercise per week - whether it was done in two days or throughout the week.

What was particularly surprising was that the authors found that people who only exercised on the weekends had:

  • The risk of death from all causes was reduced by 32% compared with a 26% reduction in the daily exercise group.
  • The risk of death from cardiovascular disease was reduced by 31% compared with only a 24% reduction in the daily exercise group.
  • The risk of death from cancer was reduced by 21% compared with a 13% reduction in the daily exercise group, according to the scientific journal JAHA .

This message is good news for busy people who don't have time to exercise every day but can exercise on 1-2 days on the weekend, concluded study author Dr. Zhi-Hao Li, an epidemiologist at Southern Medical University.

Research shows that even occasional exercise can have long-term health benefits, making it easier for people to prioritize health in their busy schedules.

You don’t have to exercise every day to stay healthy, Dr. Li notes. Just 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise on one or two days a week can significantly reduce your risk of death from heart disease, cancer, or other causes.

Exercising just twice a week can help strengthen your heart muscle, improve its ability to pump blood efficiently, and reduce your risk of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It can also help prevent diabetes, anxiety, depression, arthritis, and kidney, lung, and stomach cancers, according to the JAHA.
