Prestigious global forum on economics

WEF (World Economic Forum) is one of the prestigious and effective global forums, attracting the attention and participation of most leaders of major countries, international organizations as well as the world's leading corporations and companies.

Every year, WEF organizes many global and regional forums, bringing together government leaders, business leaders, social and religious organizations, and scholars from around the world to discuss prominent issues and global news.

The World Economic Forum was first known in January 1971 as the Global Governance Forum (EMF), when a group of leading European businesses met under the auspices of the European Commission and the European Chamber of Commerce.

The original purpose of the EMF was to discuss modern management concepts. The meeting was chaired by Klaus Schwab, Professor of Business Policy at the University of Geneva, who held it in Davos, Switzerland.

Since 1987, EMF has been renamed the World Economic Forum (WEF). The forum is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. WEF currently has about 700 partners who are leaders of the world's leading corporations in various fields. Politicians have only participated in WEF meetings since 1994 and WEF has officially been an independent international organization since 2015.

In particular, the WEF is one of the first forums to discuss the Fourth Industrial Revolution and is currently implementing a number of specific and substantive initiatives such as the Fourth Industrial Revolution Center in the United States, India and Japan and the Cybersecurity Center with the participation of 92 partners.

The most important forum of WEF is the Annual Conference held every January in Davos, Switzerland. Besides the Davos Conference, WEF also organizes regional forums every year, typically the WEF Conference on East Asia (now WEF ASEAN), the Annual Conference of WEF Pioneers - "Summer Davos Forum" (held in Tianjin or Dalian, China), WEF Conference on India, WEF Conference on Latin America, WEF Conference on the Middle East, etc.

WEF events attract the world's leading political, business, cultural, social, research-academic leaders to shape agendas at the regional and global levels.

Vietnam-WEF cooperation milestone

The cooperative relationship between Vietnam and WEF began in 1989, right at the time when the economic reform process began. This is an important dialogue forum between the Vietnamese Government leaders and the world's leading corporations, helping to suggest ideas for economic reform, while providing Vietnam with opportunities for investment and domestic economic development.

At the invitation of Professor Klaus Schwab - Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will lead a high-ranking delegation of the Vietnamese Government to attend the 54th WEF Annual Meeting, from January 15-19 in Davos (Switzerland).

Over the past 35 years, senior leaders of Vietnam have regularly attended the WEF Annual Conferences in Davos, Switzerland and East Asia. Of which, Vietnam has attended the WEF Davos Conference 4 times at the Prime Minister level (in 2007, 2010, 2017 and 2019) and often attended at the Deputy Prime Minister level; attended the WEF ASEAN Conference 5 times (before 2016, it was the WEF East Asia) at the Prime Minister level (in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018) and often attended at the Deputy Prime Minister level in other years...

Most recently, there were activities such as: Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh co-chaired the first Vietnam-WEF National Strategy Dialogue online (October 29, 2021); Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the 14th Annual Meeting of Pioneers of the World Economic Forum (WEF), also known as the "Summer Davos Forum" in Tianjin, China (June 2023); Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh co-chaired the second National Strategy Dialogue (June 26, 2023) at the 2023 WEF Tianjin Conference...

Attending the WEF has significantly contributed to enhancing the image, role and position of Vietnam in the international arena through the contribution of positive and effective proposals and initiatives at the conference. In particular, the meetings and exchanges between Vietnam and the world's leading corporations have also contributed to suggesting ideas for economic reform, while providing Vietnam with opportunities for investment and domestic economic development.

According to Ambassador Le Thi Tuyet Mai, Head of the Vietnamese Delegation in Geneva, since establishing cooperative relations with WEF in 1989, Vietnam has always considered this an important dialogue forum for government leaders with the world's leading corporations; respects and appreciates the WEF's constant interest in proposing and implementing many cooperation initiatives in the fields of sustainable development, digital transformation, innovation, and hopes that in the coming time, the Forum will continue to support Vietnam in accessing advanced knowledge and resources to serve sustainable development goals and effectively utilize new growth drivers.

WEF founding chairman, Professor Klaus Schwab, has repeatedly affirmed the role and prestige of Vietnam and the cooperation between Vietnam and WEF that has always been promoted and developed by leaders of both sides.

Most recently, on the occasion of attending the 43rd ASEAN Summit and related conferences in Jakarta, Indonesia (September 2023), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with WEF President Klaus Schwab to discuss enhancing cooperation between Vietnam and WEF.

Here, WEF Chairman Klaus Schwab continued to appreciate Vietnam's socio-economic development achievements in recent times, especially the comprehensive approach to macroeconomic management, helping the economy overcome challenges in the current international and regional context; assessing Vietnam as a bright spot of economic growth after the Covid-19 pandemic.

For his part, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam will coordinate to effectively implement the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between Vietnam and WEF for the 2023-2026 period; continue to participate and actively contribute to WEF initiatives and activities, and expressed his hope that WEF will coordinate with Vietnam to host many activities bringing together leading experts and economic policymakers from around the world and the region to discuss issues of common concern, contributing to creating new driving forces, including the application of advances in science and technology to promote global economic recovery and growth.

Rebuilding trust

Continuing the tradition of more than 4 decades since 1971, this year, the 54th annual World Economic Forum (WEF) (or WEF Davos 2024) takes place from January 15 to 19, 2024 in Davos, Switzerland, gathering the participation of many leaders of countries, major international organizations, multinational companies and scholars, with a consistent spirit of openness and cooperation.

In that context, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's participation in WEF Davos 2024 in Switzerland continues to be an opportunity for the Vietnamese Government leaders to directly convey to leaders of countries, international organizations, and multinational companies Vietnam's ideas, strong commitments, and solutions to implement its strategy for sustainable socio-economic development and international integration, including continuing to strongly innovate the growth model, develop a green economy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote innovation and digital transformation on the principles of equality, inclusion, and enhance resilience and response to climate change, demonstrating Vietnam's determination and efforts to fulfill its commitments at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26), bringing net emissions to "zero" by 2050.

At the same time, the participation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the high-ranking delegation of Vietnam at WEF Davos 2024 also affirms the role, position and prestige of Vietnam in the international arena. With the achievements, business and investment environment as well as the current socio-economic development strategy, Vietnam continues to be a destination highly appreciated by global business leaders and international organizations in business development and international cooperation.
