At the working sessions, representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development informed the Korean business delegation about the potential, advantages as well as the conservation and development of medicinal herbs in the province. Accordingly, Gia Lai has rich forest resources and biodiversity in flora and fauna, with 537 rare medicinal species belonging to 135 families with widespread use value, great potential to develop into key products, contributing significantly to the protection, care of people's health and socio-economic development. Of which, 21 medicinal plant species are rare plants recorded in the Vietnam Red Book, 30 main medicinal plant species are widely used, with high economic value such as: cardamom, angelica, ginseng, codonopsis, red polygonum, orchid gold ...
In addition, in recent times, with many sources of capital, localities, businesses and people in the province have invested in developing and expanding the area of medicinal herbs grown on agricultural land with nearly 4,000 hectares including: Euryale, Polyscias fruticosa, Turmeric, Ginger, Orchid, Amomum, Panax ginseng, Angelica sinensis, Codonopsis pilosula, Solanum procumbens, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Polygonum multiflorum...
Most of these medicinal herbs are grown on a large scale with systematic techniques. The model of growing ginseng of Quang Vinh Medicinal Herbs Agricultural Cooperative (village 1, So Pai commune, Kbang district) yields 6 tons of fresh fruit/ha, profit of about 335 million VND/ha; the model of intercropping Solanum procumbens in coffee gardens in Ia Tiem commune (Chu Se district) yields 30 tons/ha, profit of 40-50 million VND/ha... Notably, the province has also established 3 medicinal herb processing facilities of Truong Sinh International Science Development Company Limited, Dong Nam Duoc Gia Lai Joint Stock Company (Tra Da Industrial Park, Pleiku City) and the Medicinal Herbs Factory in the Industrial-Handicraft Cluster of Chu Pah district.
Investment projects in developing medicinal plants have received special attention from the province in recent times. Currently, there are 4 projects approved for investment with a total capital of about 497 billion VND; 10 projects in the investment calling list with a scale of about 1,821 hectares, with a total expected investment capital of over 7,272 billion VND. At the same time, the Department of Planning and Investment is continuing to complete procedures to advise the Provincial People's Committee to supplement the investment calling list for the period 2021-2025 (phase 2) for 9 projects on planting, propagating and developing medicinal plants with high technology applications, developing medicinal plants under the forest canopy with a total area of 8,450 hectares, with a total investment capital of 4,197 billion VND.
However, the development of medicinal herbs under the forest canopy is not commensurate with the existing potential. In the province, only 2 districts, Kbang and Dak Doa, have implemented zoning to protect and sustainably develop medicinal plants including: mat nhan, sam cau, sam da, etc. The presence of Korean enterprises in the medicinal herbs sector is truly a big "push" for the Gia Lai medicinal herbs industry to reach new heights.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hoan - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - said: According to the plan by 2025, Gia Lai will develop the area of medicinal plants to reach 5,000-10,000 hectares, of which Ngoc Linh ginseng, Kim Tuyen orchid each type 300-500 hectares; That Diep Nhat Chi Hoa 200-300 hectares, Dinh Lang 500-1,500 hectares... The province aims to form at least 4 establishments producing and trading medicinal plant seedlings to ensure the supply of over 70% of the demand for high-quality seedlings for organizations and individuals participating in planting. At the same time, at Kon Ka Kinh National Park and Kon Chu Rang Nature Reserve, the province will form 2 centers for experimental planting, production of precious medicinal plant varieties, commercial medicinal plant varieties with economic value and advantages; focusing on conserving 21 rare medicinal plant species listed in the Vietnam Red Book; aiming to build a Center for Preserving Traditional Medicine Knowledge and Gene Sources of Precious Medicinal Plants of the Central Highlands Ethnic Community...
Impressed with Gia Lai's potential for medicinal plant development, Korean enterprises expressed their wish that the province would create more favorable conditions for them to learn and survey the needs and actual situation in order to have more investment orientations in this field in the future.
During the survey, Korean enterprises were very interested in the medicinal herbs of the province. In particular, enterprises are also looking for a suitable environment to grow Korean ginseng. As a person with many years of experience in growing and exporting Korean ginseng, Mr. Namgung Yoon-soo - Executive Director of the Jeonbuk Ginseng Association - shared: "Korean ginseng is suitable for areas with weather from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, average rainfall of 1,100-1,300 mm/year, soil pH of 5-6, and sandy soil. Ginseng will grow better if planted on the slope facing north. In addition, after planting, management must be done very well. On this occasion, we really want to learn and directly survey areas with similar conditions in Gia Lai to test planting, aiming to develop this ginseng species here".
In addition, the Executive Director of the Jeonbuk Ginseng Association also shared some aeroponic and hydroponic ginseng growing technologies that Korean enterprises are effectively implementing. Regarding this issue, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Mai - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology - Information: Gia Lai is very interested in growing and processing some medicinal herbs such as: ginseng, codonopsis. Regarding aeroponic ginseng growing technology, the Department of Science and Technology is cooperating with Ton Duc Thang University (Ho Chi Minh City) to implement the topic "Building a process to grow young ginseng (Korean ginseng and red codonopsis) using aeroponic methods in Gia Lai". Currently, this model is being experimentally grown, hopefully there will be positive results in the near future.
Professor Oh Sang Sik, Chairman of the International Agricultural Network in Vietnam, Head of the working group, briefly introduced Korean ginseng. |
Discussing with Korean businesses about ginseng growing conditions, the Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: Some areas in the Northeast of the province have suitable weather and rainfall conditions for growing Korean ginseng. In particular, this is also an area included in the province's ginseng growing and development plan.
On that basis, during the visit and working session with Kon Ka Kinh National Park, through surveying the soil quality and natural conditions, the business delegation decided to test planting nearly 500 Korean ginseng plants from 1 to 3 years old in the area of the Rescue Center, conservation and development of organisms on an area of about 120 m2. Experts instructed the staff and employees of the Park on how to make beds, planting techniques as well as ginseng care.
