The number of students and technical interns has increased sharply as Japan lifted border closure measures to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic.
Of the total of more than 3 million people mentioned above, there are more than 761,500 Chinese (accounting for the highest proportion), followed by Vietnamese (489,300 people) and Koreans (more than 411,300 people). All of these figures increased compared to a year ago, according to Jiji Press news agency.
In another statistic published earlier this year, the number of Vietnamese workers in Japan has increased 17 times in 10 years (2012-2022). According to a report by the Ministry of Health , Labor and Welfare, as of October 31, 2022, the number of foreign workers in Japan also reached a record high of more than 1.82 million people, an increase of 5.5% over the previous year.
Of which, Vietnamese workers surpassed Chinese workers (including Hong Kong and Macao workers) to become the largest source of foreign workers in Japan. There are over 462,300 Vietnamese workers (accounting for 25.4%), followed by Chinese workers (nearly 386,000 people, accounting for 21.2%) and Filipino workers (over 206,000 people, accounting for 11.3%).

Compared to 10 years ago, the number of foreign workers in Japan has doubled, with the number of Vietnamese workers alone increasing 17 times, according to Nippon .
In terms of occupation, the manufacturing industry has the largest number of foreign workers, followed by the wholesale and retail trade and accommodation and food services industries. The number of Japanese companies hiring foreigners also reached a record high in 2022, reaching nearly 299,000 places, due to the labor shortage.
Geographically, Tokyo is home to the largest number of foreign workers (more than 500,000), followed by Aichi Prefecture (more than 188,600) and Osaka Prefecture (more than 124,500). Among Japan's 47 prefectures, only Gunma has seen a decline in the number of foreign workers.
