"I asked for a laptop because I thought it was... socialized education"
On the morning of September 30, Ms. Truong Phuong Hanh, a teacher at Chuong Duong Primary School, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, shared with VietNamNet reporters about asking parents for money to buy laptops.
To begin, Ms. Hanh said that currently there is information published in the press that is not true, this has turned her life upside down.
"Especially the information that I asked for a laptop but was not allowed to prepare the review outline for the students. Even my bank account was leaked and posted online, some people transferred a few thousand dong to me along with insulting and cursing words" - Ms. Hanh said.
Regarding the recent incident, Ms. Hanh said that she is the homeroom teacher of class 4/3, which has 38 students. "In the parent meeting at the beginning of the year, I clearly stated that I would not collect class funds because this was very troublesome and against regulations. Also at the meeting, I said that last year, a computer was lost at school, this was reported to the school but the board of directors did not take any action. Class 4/3 had a TV since last year, so I asked parents and donors to support me in buying a laptop for teaching because I thought this was socializing education," Ms. Hanh said.
Also according to Ms. Hanh, later Ms. Ngan - the head of the parents' association said that they had to collect the class fund, so the parents in the class discussed collecting 200,000 VND or 300,000 VND. In the end, the parents collected 500,000 VND/person. The head of the parents' association collected the money and said that she would give her 5-6 million VND to buy a laptop.
"The parents said to let the homeroom teacher keep the fund, then handed over 14.5 million VND to me. I sent a message on the class group that I had collected 14.5 million VND from 29 parents, 500,000 VND was donated to the scholarship fund, and 300,000 VND was donated to the nanny."
Regarding buying a laptop, Ms. Hanh said that she went to look and there were two types, priced at 5.5 million and 11 million, so she asked her parents for 6 million, and she would pay the rest herself.
Regarding the reason for saying "this laptop is mine", Ms. Hanh said that in previous years, she had asked to buy items such as printers, microphones... and left them in the classroom at the end of the year, then parents asked for them back. But the laptop was different, because it stored a lot of personal data, so she thought the laptop was hers.
After that, Ms. Hanh proactively met with the principal, who advised her not to accept the money to buy the laptop because "it was not worth much and would cause scandal."
"I told the principal that if education is socialized and parents support, I will accept it. But based on his opinion, I will not accept this support. Therefore, on the class's parent group, I opened a vote to agree or disagree. Luckily, 3 parents disagreed, this was the reason for me not to accept this amount of money. After that, I sent a message on the class group that I would not accept the laptop," said Ms. Hanh.
"I will regain my honor"
Looking back at the incident, Ms. Hanh said: "The parents complained that I changed the homeroom teacher because I did not receive the money, so the parents thought I was sulking."
According to Ms. Hanh, asking parents for support to buy a laptop is against the rules. She herself was aware of this by not accepting the support.
Regarding the question of why she asked "which student's parent is this?", Ms. Hanh said that the class had 38 students, while the parent group on Zalo had 47 people, so she asked which student's parent it was.
"I would like to reiterate that I asked for laptops because I thought it was a social issue, not because of economic difficulties. In previous years, I have supported students many times, even giving them phones to study online" - said Ms. Hanh.
The female teacher hopes that everything will be clarified soon to resolve the confusion, because this affects her health and spirit. On the other hand, this is a matter of honor, so she will go to the end to regain her honor.
On the morning of September 30, Chuong Duong Primary School decided to temporarily suspend an employee. Accordingly, Ms. Truong Phuong Hanh, homeroom teacher of class 4/3 and head of grade 4, was temporarily suspended for 15 days. The reason is to verify and clarify the complaint, stabilize the situation of parents and students while considering disciplinary action.
Regarding the suspension, Ms. Hanh said: "I have worked in the industry for 30 years, so I can retire now, but the suspension is very stressful, so I have to be strong to overcome it."
