During the last two years of high school, student Tran Nhu Ngoc sat comfortably on the back of Ms. Hoa's motorbike to go to class every day.

"Let me take you"

One afternoon at the end of 2021, Ms. Hoa passed by Ngoc's classroom after school and saw her sitting alone in the corner of the classroom.

When asked, she learned that in order to go to school in the afternoon, Ngoc had to ask a neighbor for a ride to pick up her child from school in the morning. It was better to go to school early than to be late if she couldn't get a ride.

Suffering from the terrible disease hydrocephalus, Ngoc's body has developed abnormally since childhood and her health is weak.

Although Ngoc is a 10th grader, she is only over 1 meter tall, and her short limbs make it difficult for her to move around. Ngoc's family consists of only her and her mother, and her mother is old and doesn't know how to ride a bicycle or motorbike.

Since first grade, the school was a few kilometers from home but Ngoc was too weak to walk far, so every day she got to class by hitchhiking.

Ms. Hoa heard the story and immediately said: "When you're in 11th grade, you'll have the same class as me. Let me take you."

For two years, rain or shine, Ms. Hoa would go back and forth to pick Ngoc up from her house to class and then take her home after school. On days when she didn't have class, Ms. Hoa's husband, who was also a teacher at the same school, would take on the "mission" of escorting Ngoc.

Ms. Hoa shared: "My eldest child is the same age as Ngoc. Seeing her struggling to go to school, I feel sorry for her like my own child. I help her in any way I can."

The teacher is worried about her students.

The road leading to Ngoc’s house in Thach Nham Dong village, Hoa Nhon commune is small and bumpy. Every day, sitting behind her teacher’s bike, Ngoc would whisper stories about her class and ask her about anything she had trouble with.

Ngoc said: "My body is disabled and I have to ask for a ride home every day, which makes me feel inferior and sometimes discouraged. My health is weak, I can't walk a few kilometers to school. Ms. Hoa's rides not only help me get to class but also help me gradually overcome my inferiority complex and gain more confidence in pursuing my studies."

Mrs. Tran Thi Mai (62 years old, Ngoc's mother) said that the two of them live on the little money she makes from selling lemongrass and vegetables. Mrs. Mai's biggest dream in life is that Ngoc will have a job and be able to take care of herself.

For many years, every time her child went to school, Mrs. Mai would walk behind her, and only when her child asked for a car would she feel at ease and return home. There were rainy days when her child had not returned home, and she was anxious and walked to look for her. When she saw Ngoc trudging through the dark because she could not ask for a car, she could only hold back her tears.

"Since Ms. Hoa has been taking me to and from school, I feel very secure because I know my child will be able to get there safely. I am very grateful to Ms. Hoa and her husband, I don't know how to repay them," said Ms. Mai.

Grateful but with nothing to repay, sometimes there was a bunch of ripe bananas or a bunch of vegetables in the garden, Mrs. Mai picked them and waited for Ms. Hoa to take her child to the end of the village, then quickly put them into the teacher's hands.

Recently, the joy of hearing that her student passed the cultural studies major at Da Nang University of Education did not last long, Ms. Hoa was speechless when she heard that Ngoc had left the university.

Ngoc's decision to stop studying made Ms. Hoa even more worried. Although she had gone to school to complete the admission procedures, the tuition fee for four years was too high. With Ngoc's appearance and health, she was afraid that she would not be able to find a job after graduation, leaving her mother in debt.

Hearing the story, Ms. Hoa ran around to find an acquaintance who worked at the commune committee, asking her to help Ngoc find a social protection center so that she could be accepted to study and work, but she waited a long time without hearing back.

Currently, Ms. Hoa is still on a journey to find a way for Ngoc, hoping that she will have a job in the future to become a useful person for society.

"Typical Da Nang Teacher"

Mr. Thai Quang Binh, principal of Ong Ich Khiem High School (Hoa Vang District, Da Nang City), said that Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Hoa is the head of the school's history - economics and law group. For two consecutive years, Ms. Hoa has been awarded a certificate of merit by the Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee for her excellent performance. Ms. Hoa is one of 25 teachers to receive the "Outstanding Da Nang Teacher" award for the 2023-2024 school year.
