The teacher is accused of assault and using abusive language.

(NLĐO) - The Department of Education and Training of Nha Trang City (Khanh Hoa) is investigating a case where parents accused a homeroom teacher of hitting students and using inappropriate language.

The Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper received a complaint from Ms. Tran Thi Xuan Phuong, the parent of a student in class 2/3 at TL 1 Primary School (Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province), accusing teacher NTKT of physically assaulting students and using inappropriate language unbecoming of a teacher.

Hit on the shoulder, back?

According to Ms. Phuong, the math curriculum requires students to memorize the multiplication and division tables for 2 and 5. However, in reality, she makes them memorize all the multiplication and division tables from 2 to 9 in a short period of time.

When the students couldn't memorize the material, the homeroom teacher pressured them with threatening words and hit them with a wooden ruler. The students had to learn a large amount of information in a short time while feeling anxious and scared... This is an extremely counterproductive and uneducational practice.

According to this parent, the homeroom teacher often addresses the students in class 2/3 using informal pronouns like "I/me" and "sir/madam." The parent believes the teacher's way of addressing students is like that of a fish market vendor, and that it negatively impacts the children's character development. Many children have questioned their parents after school about why the teacher addressed them in that manner.

Furthermore, the parent also claimed that when the children submitted incomplete notebooks, they were also hit with a wooden ruler by the homeroom teacher. Some children who did their homework beforehand were also hit, while others were not, leading to the perception that the teacher was biased and unfair. After the parent directly complained, the homeroom teacher retaliated and put pressure on the children…

"Parents agree with the teacher's strictness in teaching the students, but her hitting them on areas like the shoulders and back, along with verbally abusing them, is unacceptable. These incidents not only cause students to feel stressed and anxious about their studies but also make me constantly worried and uneasy about their daily school life. I have repeatedly raised concerns with the homeroom teacher and the principal, but the classroom situation has not improved significantly," the parent stated.

According to this parent, during two meetings, the school requested a meeting with the homeroom teacher for a confrontation, but this was not allowed. Some parents wish to have the homeroom teacher replaced and surveillance cameras installed in the classroom.

The school is not taking sides.

Reporters from the Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper worked with the school administration of TL 1 Primary School to clarify the contents of the complaint. According to the principal, after parents complained about the homeroom teacher of class 2/3, the school requested Ms. NTKT to explain the incident. At the same time, the school also worked with the three parents who were upset with Ms. KT and clarified the details of the complaint.

The principal stated that when parents reported that their children were being beaten, the school only recorded the incident, as the parents did not provide any accompanying images. Even if images were available, they would need to be verified to determine if they were authentic or if they had been manipulated or edited.

The homeroom teacher, KT, gently touched the students' hands, but only at the request of parents to correct their academic performance. Regarding teaching the multiplication table in advance, the school stated that the teacher only encouraged the students and did not physically punish them.

Regarding the communication issue, the school acknowledges that the teacher's use of "sir - I" (informal pronouns) was inappropriate and violated regulations. The school is not defending the teacher on this matter but is using it as a way to learn from the experience. Teacher KT also requested a direct meeting with the parents to apologize for the issue.

According to the principal, the request from parents to change the homeroom teacher has not yet been supported by other parents because there are only two months left in the school year. The head of the Parent-Teacher Association, based on the voting results, has also submitted a request to keep Ms. KT as the homeroom teacher until the end of the year. Furthermore, the school only has two teachers left – one subject teacher and one contract teacher – who are unsuitable for the role of homeroom teacher.

Regarding the installation of surveillance cameras to monitor the teacher, the school disagreed because there are no regulations on this matter. "For some unfortunate incidents that occurred, the school has apologized to the parents. The school will take corrective measures to avoid such regrettable situations in the future," the principal stated.

Annoyed and lacking self-control, I used inappropriate language.

Meanwhile, in her explanation, Ms. NTKT stated: "I threatened the children to encourage them to memorize the multiplication table, but I did not hit any of them for not knowing the multiplication table as the parents alleged in their complaint."

The teacher also admitted: "Sometimes, frustrated by the students' disobedience, I lose my self-control and sometimes use inappropriate forms of address. I wish the parents had sincerely given me feedback so I could adjust. I acknowledge this and will learn from it in the future."

In addition, the teacher also stated: "Some students haven't finished their assignments and are hiding their notebooks instead of submitting them. I reminded them to be conscientious, but they still didn't bring their notebooks. I said, 'Anyone who doesn't submit their notebook will be punished,' but in reality, I haven't hit anyone yet."

At the same time, the teacher also affirmed that she always treats the whole class fairly, so there is no discrimination or pressure on any students.

The aforementioned incident has been received by the Nha Trang City Department of Education and Training. The Department has also requested the Primary School Unit to verify the information and report on the matter.

In addition, Ms. Vo Thi Thanh Minh, Chairwoman of the Tan Tien Ward People's Committee, said that on Monday (March 17), the ward will work with the school regarding the aforementioned incident.
