After the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) announced the regulations for admission to grade 10 starting in 2025, many parents and students continue to worry and wait for the provincial Department of Education and Training to finalize the third exam subject.
"The anxiety never stops," is the sentiment shared by most parents whose children are taking the 10th grade entrance exam. Although the Ministry of Education and Training has finalized the exam plan, students and parents are still anxiously awaiting information about the third subject.
Ms. Nguyen Hoai Phuong (Tay Ho district, Hanoi ) shared: "I hope the third exam subject is English. If parents are so anxious, imagine the pressure on the children and teachers."
According to Circular 30/TT-BGDĐT of the Ministry of Education and Training on the regulations for admission to junior high schools and high schools, which was recently issued and takes effect from February 14, 2025, the entrance exam for grade 10 will include: Mathematics, Literature, and one third subject or test chosen by the Department of Education and Training.

The third subject is selected by the Department of Education and Training from subjects assessed with scores, including: Foreign Language 1, Civic Education , Natural Sciences, History and Geography, Technology, and Informatics.
Accordingly, the third exam subject could be Natural Sciences, comprising Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, or History and Geography, comprising History and Geography.
Therefore, the exam will not be a single subject: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, but may be an integrated exam combining these sub-disciplines according to each subject group.
The new circular also stipulates that localities may not choose the same third exam subject for more than three consecutive years, starting from the date this circular comes into effect.
With the new regulations, although the Ministry of Education and Training has reduced the number of subjects in the 10th grade entrance exam to four, many students and parents are concerned that if the Department of Education and Training chooses integrated subjects for the exam, it will increase pressure on students.
Dinh Van Khanh, a student from Co Bi Secondary School (Gia Lam district, Hanoi), said: "If the third exam subject is Natural Sciences, then we will have to review Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. So, although we're supposed to be taking 3 exams, we have to study and review 5 subjects."
Furthermore, according to the new circular, the third exam subject or combined exam for some subjects will be announced after the end of the first semester, but no later than March 31st of each year.
Nguyen Do Ngoc, a student from Trung Phung Secondary School (Dong Da district, Hanoi), expressed her wish for the Hanoi Department of Education and Training to finalize the third exam subject soon so that students have more time to prepare.
The 2024-2025 school year marks the end of the 2018 General Education Program implementation cycle. Accordingly, the high school entrance exam for grade 10 will be conducted for the first time under the new program.
Ms. Dinh Quynh Nga (Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi) believes that there are still some shortcomings in teaching integrated subjects according to the new curriculum. Therefore, if the Department of Education and Training chooses an integrated subject as the third exam subject, the exam will be more difficult for students.
Therefore, the third exam subject should be announced early on, rather than waiting until the end of March, to avoid unnecessary pressure.
Regarding Circular No. 30/TT-BGDĐT, the Ministry of Education and Training stated that the circular was developed based on the principle of inheriting the appropriate content of Circular No. 11/2014/TT-BGDĐT promulgating the Regulations on admission to junior high schools and high schools; and supplementing new regulations that are appropriate to the educational and social context.
The circular ensures the core principle of not creating unnecessary burdens or costs for parents, students, and society, with a streamlined approach that minimizes administrative procedures; in line with the digital transformation policy in the field of education and training.
"This is a consistent viewpoint emphasized in Resolution 29-NQ/TW of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam on fundamental and comprehensive reform of education and training; especially in the content regarding reform of testing and evaluation. This viewpoint continues to be expressed in Conclusion No. 91-KL/TW of the Politburo on continuing fundamental and comprehensive reform of education and training," the Ministry of Education and Training stated.
Immediately after the Ministry of Education and Training issued the circular on the regulations for admission to junior high schools and high schools, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training released official information about the 2025 entrance exam for grade 10.
Accordingly, the 2025 entrance exam for 10th grade in Ho Chi Minh City will consist of three subjects: Literature, Mathematics, and English.
According to the analysis of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the secondary school curriculum ensures that students have access to fundamental knowledge and issues, and can determine their own direction, serving as a basis for choosing appropriate subjects in high school. Therefore, the third exam subject must ensure that it does not affect the students' psychology, revision process, and subject choices in high school.
On the other hand, foreign languages are compulsory subjects from grade 3 to grade 12. Other subjects such as Natural Sciences, History and Geography, Technology, or Informatics may not be chosen by students when entering grade 10. The random selection of a third exam subject leads to students having to take exams in subjects unrelated to their career aspirations, thus causing psychological "shock" and stress before the exam.
