Libby, now 20, a dancer studying musical theatre at the University of Leeds (UK), has just shared about the first symptoms she experienced before being diagnosed with lymphoma.

Two years ago, she started having headaches and extreme fatigue, but she thought she was exercising too much so she didn’t pay much attention. It wasn’t until she passed out that her friends took her to the emergency room.

After running all the tests, doctors diagnosed stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma - a rare cancer that develops in the lymphatic system.

Libby Sunter shares about the cancer symptoms she experienced

"I think the biggest shock was that I thought I was very healthy, but it was so unexpected. Even the symptoms I had, I completely ignored and didn't even think they could be related to anything as serious as that," she said.

After seven months of chemotherapy at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Libby received the good news that her cancer was in remission. She now only has to have regular check-ups to monitor her condition.

Signs and symptoms of lymphoma

Lymphoma usually presents as painless lymph nodes. Depending on whether the lymphoma progresses quickly or slowly, the symptoms will vary. In the case of lymphoma that progresses quickly, the lymph nodes will rapidly enlarge and vice versa. Hodgkin lymphoma usually appears in the lymph nodes above the diaphragm. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma can originate anywhere in the body, such as the digestive tract, skin or central nervous system.

In patients with advanced disease, systemic symptoms such as fever, unexplained weight loss, and night sweats may appear. Lymphoma metastasizes to extralymphatic sites by direct invasion or hematogenous metastasis to the spleen, liver, lungs, or bone marrow.

Some emergency cases of cancer due to the increasing invasion of the tumor will appear symptoms such as superior vena cava syndrome, malignant extradural spinal cord compression or malignant pericardial effusion. Symptoms of paraneoplastic syndromes are rare, such as paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration in Hodgkin's lymphoma, dermatomyositis and polymyositis in Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Who is at risk for lymphoma?

Risk factors for Hodgkin lymphoma include:

- Many cases are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 30 and in people over 55 years of age.

- Men are at higher risk of developing lymphoma than women.

- People who have siblings with lymphoma have a higher risk of developing the disease.

- People with infectious mononucleosis. EBV infection can cause mononucleosis, which increases the risk of lymphoma.

- People with weakened immune systems and those infected with HIV are at higher risk of developing lymphoma.

What can be done to prevent lymphoma?

Avoid being overweight or obese

Obesity is a risk factor for lymphoma, so you should keep your body weight at an acceptable level. Do not let being overweight or obese lead to many other dangerous diseases.

Exercise regularly

Exercise has been shown to help prevent leukemia and is no exception. So aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise every day to keep your health in tip-top shape.

Nutrition

You should regularly eat whole grains, fruits, vegetables and reduce consumption of saturated fats, trans fats, and animal fats. You should build a healthy diet, with fresh food sources.

In addition, it is necessary to proactively have regular health check-ups to detect diseases early and have timely treatment measures.

Limit exposure to chemicals

Chemicals such as herbicides and benzene are among the main risks of developing leukemia and lymphoma. Therefore, if your job is specific, you should limit exposure and wear protective gear such as gloves and masks.

Avoid radiation exposure

Radiation is also the cause of changes in blood composition, so minimize exposure to high concentrations of radiation to limit disease.
