At the Hemophilia Center, the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion once received a female patient (22 years old) who had bleeding after eyelid surgery, resulting in blindness in both eyes. This girl went to a beauty salon for eyelid surgery and had uncontrollable bleeding due to a blood clotting disorder (chronic DIC) on the background of a congenital hemangioma that was not diagnosed before surgery.
According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai, Director of the Hemophilia Center, in the world as well as in Vietnam, there are many women and girls with bleeding disorders such as: abnormal platelet function (Glanzman), von Willebrand, reduced fibrinogen, deficiency of one of the clotting factors I, II, V, VII, X, XI, XIII... Up to now, many women with bleeding disorders have not been diagnosed and fully cared for, leading to many consequences, affecting their health, daily life, even their ability to be mothers and their lives.
"There are things that seem simple and very popular nowadays, such as beauty treatments, but if women are not alert enough to choose reputable and professional cosmetic facilities, beauty treatments can have unpredictable consequences," said Dr. Mai.
Bleeding disorders are a group of diseases characterized by prolonged, slow-to-stop bleeding caused by the patient's body having difficulty forming blood clots. According to statistics, 1 in 1,000 people worldwide have bleeding disorders. If the patient is not detected early, diagnosed and treated properly, it will lead to undesirable consequences such as weakness, pain, complications and permanent joint damage, or worse, death due to bleeding in serious locations.
Bleeding disorders can occur in both men and women. However, many people mistakenly believe that bleeding disorders only occur in men. According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Mai, there are many reasons for this misconception.
The first cause is that among bleeding disorders, hemophilia is the most common genetic disease (with about 10,000 patients in Vietnam) with quite prominent symptoms. If hemophilia patients are not treated properly, it can cause serious complications such as joint deformities, muscle atrophy, cerebral hemorrhage... causing many patients to become disabled. The vast majority of hemophilia patients are men, so many people think that women are less affected by bleeding disorders.
Another reason is that a common symptom of blood clotting disorders in women is heavy bleeding during menstruation. Women often think this is a private matter, so they hesitate to go to the doctor or share it with others. In addition, in the patient's family, there may be other female members such as mother, sister, younger sister... who also have heavy bleeding, so they consider it normal. Due to this subjectivity and fear, bleeding disorders in women are often discovered late, leading to many unfortunate consequences.
From the above causes, the Director of the Hemophilia Center recommends: "People need to raise awareness and capacity to diagnose and treat bleeding disorders in women to prevent unfortunate risks that may occur and improve the quality of life of patients."
