After 6 years of studying and working in Hanoi , Ms. Pham Dieu Linh decided to return to her husband's hometown in Moc Chau town (Son La) with the desire to slow down and be closer to nature.
Returning to Moc Chau, not having enough financial means to buy land to build a new house, Ms. Linh rented a piece of land with an area of over 800m2, for 20 million VND/year. The land is located in Ban Ang tourist area (Moc Chau, Son La), about 4km from the center of Moc Chau town (Son La), convenient for traveling.
Ms. Linh said: “The land I rented has an old warehouse, about 200 square meters wide, surrounded by wild grass and trees. The roof of the house is broken, the walls have not been plastered yet, only the wall frame is still usable.
At first, Ms. Linh encountered many difficulties when she renovated most of the house herself, including painting, building fences, and decorating corners.
Just painting the house and fence took Linh nearly a month. Because she was still clumsy and not proficient at the job, every time she finished painting, she was covered in paint.
Sharing the reason for deciding to change the look of the land to a European countryside style, Ms. Linh said: “Since childhood, I have been fascinated by fairy tales and European movies with images of small houses, white wooden fences, and flower gardens. When I had the opportunity to realize my dream, I decided to build my home in this style.”
After half a year, the house was renovated with a new look, designed in the style of a garden house including: 1 kitchen and living room, 4 bedrooms arranged according to seasonal themes.
“The idea of designing rooms according to each season of the year comes from the fact that I feel the clear changes through each season when living close to nature. I want to bring the characteristics of each season into each room, so that each space in the house reflects the beauty and emotions of that season,” Linh shared.
Linh considers the kitchen to be the heart of the house, where warm meals are prepared. Instead of using the usual upper cabinets in the kitchen, Linh uses open shelves to display her collectibles or handmade items.
Ms. Linh also revealed that she is a nature lover and has a hobby of gardening. Taking advantage of the remaining 600m2 of land for farming, she divided it into small areas with other functions such as growing flowers to decorate the house, growing vegetables to provide clean food for the family.
When she started farming, she encountered many difficulties. Luckily, her neighbors shared their experiences and knowledge of gardening, so after a period of learning, Linh learned how to garden more proficiently. Because it is a family vegetable garden, to ensure safety, she chose to garden using organic methods.
Every day, she spends about 1-2 hours taking care of her vegetable garden. To save time and effort, she installed an automatic watering system to maintain moisture for the plants.
“In winter, when the weather is cold, I will grow vegetables such as cauliflower, kale, cabbage, etc. In hot summer, I will prioritize easy-to-grow, fast-yielding plants such as water spinach, Malabar spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. Harvesting agricultural products in the garden for myself to take care of, I feel extremely happy and excited,” said Ms. Linh.
Sharing about the difficulties in completing the house, Ms. Linh said that she exceeded her planned budget of 200 million, but luckily she had some savings and her parents supported her. Also during that time, Farming work made her lose 4kg, her skin darkened because of being exposed to the sun for many hours. However, she was still satisfied when she was able to decorate her dream house and garden with her own hands.
After a period of leaving the city to return to the countryside, Ms. Linh realized that nature is the medicine that heals and dispels the pressures of everyday life.
From here, she plans to develop homestay models like the house now to help people live in harmony with trees, flowers, and leaves, closer to the natural world , and relieve stress and pressure from life.
