The project with the campaign "Ocean Ambassador" of Nhat Uyen organizes environmental learning programs at primary schools, thereby promoting the protection of marine ecosystems and animals from the negative impacts of waste.

From student environmental initiatives

Graduated from Nha Trang University with a major in English, Uyen is known more for her scientific topics and student initiatives on environmental protection.

Uyen said that after watching a video on TV of a turtle with a plastic straw stuck in its nostril, she began to worry about the current state of the environment, especially the problem of waste.

In 2022, Uyen "started" with the invention of a machine that exchanges trash for gifts. This is a waste sorting machine shaped like an ATM. When the user inserts a plastic bottle, the machine will automatically return a paper coupon with a code printed on it. The user can scan that code to exchange for small gifts or books.

This model became a school-level scientific research topic and was approved by the Faculty of Traffic Engineering (Nha Trang University).

After that, the model was displayed in school campuses, supermarkets, public places and some technology and environmental festivals in Khanh Hoa province.

"At that time, I was still a student and did not have much experience in doing environmental projects. I was lucky to have the companionship of my group members as well as support from the school, organizations, and experts, so the project later became more widely known," Uyen said.

Spreading environmental messages to schools

Since the beginning of 2024, Uyen has started to develop and implement the "Ocean Ambassador 2024" project. This is a propaganda project for primary school students about the importance of sorting waste at source and the impact of plastic waste on the ocean ecosystem.

During extracurricular hours or the flag-raising ceremony at the beginning of the week, Nhat Uyen and other volunteers introduced students to environmental protection and the importance of classifying plastic waste through vivid and accessible stories. At the same time, they installed and introduced automatic garbage collection machines to exchange gifts for students.

In particular, 4 principles when using plastic waste are emphasized: refuse, reduce, recycle and reuse.

After the campaign, Nhat Uyen’s garbage collector will be placed in schools for a week. The collected plastic waste will be converted into funds and the money will be sent to the National Turtle Conservation Fund.

According to Nhat Uyen, the reason you chose primary school age for this propaganda activity is because this is an age group that is easy to educate and absorb.

"Proper awareness and forming good habits in protecting the environment are very important. If you understand correctly, you will practice well, thereby spreading the action to friends, relatives and family, contributing to protecting the green environment" - Uyen shared.

Ms. Le Hoang Viet Nga - Principal of Tan Lap 1 Primary School, one of the schools implementing Nhat Uyen's project - said that this is a practical project for students. Through this activity, society will pay more attention to environmental protection, especially parents who want to educate their children with a correct awareness of this issue.

To date, the project has been implemented in 4 primary schools in Nha Trang City and is expected to be implemented in all primary schools in this coastal city.

Mr. Chu Minh Phuong - Secretary of Nha Trang City Youth Union - commented: "Dang Nhat Uyen's project implemented in recent times in schools has been enthusiastically responded to by students and schools. In the coming time, the City Youth Union wishes to accompany this project to have more attractive and effective educational programs for children."
