Is it allowed to study for a master's degree in a different field?
Circular 15 issued by the Ministry of Education and Training in 2014 allows bachelors to study for a master's degree in a different field after graduating from university. The regulation also clearly divides 3 groups: Other fields, correct fields, and related fields in master's entrance exams.
For example, when you enter a master's program in Business Administration, you need to graduate from an undergraduate degree majoring in one of the following groups:
- Other majors: Other majors in Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Journalism, Law, Natural Sciences, Engineering Technology, Engineering, Architecture, Agriculture - Forestry and Fisheries.
- Right major, suitable major: Business Administration.
- Related majors: Other majors in the Business and Management field.
Conditions for studying a master's degree in a different field
In addition to meeting the requirements for a university degree, you must meet other conditions regarding additional knowledge, work experience, background and health. These are factors to consider whether you are allowed to study in a different field or not.
To study a master's program in a different field, students must fully meet the following conditions:
- Have a university degree issued by a university in Vietnam. In case students have a university degree issued by a foreign university, they must have it notarized into Vietnamese and submit it along with a certificate of the degree from the Department of Quality Management of the Ministry of Education and Training.
- Study and take additional exams in related subjects and credits.
- Have at least 2 years of experience in the professional field relevant to the applied major.
- Pass the master's entrance exam, which includes 3 knowledge blocks: basic knowledge of the industry, specialized knowledge and English.
- Candidates who meet the foreign language requirements may be exempted from the English test (IELTS English certificate of at least 6.0 or equivalent).
- Prepare complete documents and submit on time, good health to ensure study.
