Is it permissible to reverse a car in a pedestrian underpass?

When participating in traffic, vehicle operators must be self-aware and strictly comply with traffic rules, ensuring safety for themselves and others. Vehicle owners and operators are legally responsible for ensuring the safety of their vehicles on public roads.

Drivers must drive on the right side in the direction of travel, stay in the correct lane and designated road section, and obey traffic signals.

When driving a vehicle in reverse, the driver must adhere to the rules of reversing and ensure safety during the process.

Accordingly, Article 16 of the 2008 Road Traffic Law stipulates the principles for reversing a vehicle as follows:

“ 1. When reversing, the driver must observe the rear, give the necessary signals, and only reverse when it is safe to do so.”

2. Reversing is prohibited in areas where stopping is prohibited, on pedestrian crossings, at intersections, at level crossings with railways, where visibility is obstructed, in road tunnels, and on highways .

Therefore, according to Article 16 of the 2008 Road Traffic Law, the law strictly prohibits drivers from reversing in road tunnels.

Drivers who reverse their vehicles in road tunnels are considered to be violating traffic laws and will be subject to penalties as stipulated in Decree 46/2016/ND-CP, specifically as follows: A fine of VND 800,000 to VND 1,200,000 will be imposed on drivers of automobiles and similar vehicles who violate the rule of reversing in road tunnels. A fine of VND 800,000 to VND 1,000,000 will be imposed on drivers of tractors and specialized vehicles who violate the rule of reversing in road tunnels.
