Previously, as Health and Life reported, the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Bach Mai Hospital said it had recorded the first adult measles death this year, up to this point. The deceased patient had measles on a background of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes. This patient was hospitalized with severe lung complications and required dialysis. After 2 weeks of treatment, the patient passed away.
Measles is the most contagious of all infectious diseases, and anyone can get it. It can cause serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, otitis media, corneal ulcers or diarrhea, and even death.
Measles patients with complications need ventilators and dialysis at the Institute of Tropical Medicine - Bach Mai Hospital.
Currently, measles has been recorded in many adults, with severe progression and death. Every day, the Institute of Tropical Medicine receives about 10 to 20 adult patients with measles with symptoms of fever, rash, cough, watery eyes, and runny nose.
Many patients progressed severely with complications of pneumonia, respiratory failure, increased liver enzymes, diarrhea, and even encephalitis and meningitis. Most of them had not been vaccinated or had been vaccinated against measles but had not received a booster shot.
Measles cases are usually between 30 and 50 years old and subjectively do not think they have measles, so when they go to the hospital, the disease is already serious.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Do Duy Cuong - Director of the Institute of Tropical Medicine, measles is a disease with a very high infection rate through the respiratory tract, and can easily break out in the community if not controlled. Therefore, when a patient is diagnosed with measles, the patient needs to be immediately isolated for treatment to avoid spreading the disease to other cases.
"Measles cases with complications such as upper respiratory tract infection, pneumonia, increased liver enzymes, liver failure, multiple organ failure requiring dialysis, respiratory failure requiring endotracheal intubation, etc. account for about 5% of hospitalized patients. Cases with underlying diseases such as diabetes and immunodeficiency are at higher risk, easily progressing to severe conditions requiring mechanical intervention" - Associate Professor, Dr. Do Duy Cuong said.
To strengthen the prevention and control of measles epidemics to limit severe cases and deaths, the Department of Disease Prevention (Ministry of Health) recommends the prevention and control of measles for groups at high risk of severe complications related to measles as follows:
1. People at high risk (people with chronic lung disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, people over 50 years old), especially those with unknown vaccination history and have never had measles, should proactively get vaccinated against measles;
2. People at high risk of measles symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, rash should immediately go to medical facilities for examination, timely treatment advice, and to limit serious complications of the disease;
3. Limit contact with people with measles or suspected measles. If contact is necessary, wear a mask and wash your hands after contact with the patient;
4. Improve personal hygiene, nose and throat, keep warm, improve physical condition to increase resistance to prevent measles;
5. Practice good environmental hygiene, keep the working, studying and living environment well-ventilated; regularly clean the surfaces of living, working and studying places.
