The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has agreed to allow Quy Nhon Binh Dinh FC to change its name to MerryLand Quy Nhon Binh Dinh. Notably, this is the second time the team has changed its name in just three months. In mid-September 2023, they announced the name change from Topenland Binh Dinh to Quy Nhon Binh Dinh, a name reflecting the regional characteristics of the team's base.
However, this time, the VFF was forced to grant an exception because Quy Nhon Binh Dinh Club violated a clause in the Vietnamese Professional Football Regulations. The team from Central Vietnam requested a name change to the VFF "while the season was in progress." Clause 4, Article 8 of the Professional Football Regulations does not allow this. As of now, the V.League 2023/2024 season has completed 3 rounds.
Quy Nhon Binh Dinh Club requests a name change.
If we consider only the V.League this year, Quy Nhon Binh Dinh FC is the third team to change its name. Previously, HAGL and Viettel were the first two teams to request a name change and were both granted exceptional permission. Viettel FC wishes to revert to its traditional name "The Cong" with the official name The Cong - Viettel FC.
Meanwhile, HAGL Football Club found a new sponsor in LP Bank, which also sponsors Hanoi Police Football Club. However, HAGL's case involves more serious violations. The team's new name, "LP Bank - HAGL," contains the logo/name of a third party (whether a partner or sponsor), and the name is not a business name associated with the local area. Furthermore, the name change request was submitted after the V.League had already begun.
According to the Vietnamese Professional Football Regulations, teams can apply for an exception to change their name, and the decision rests with the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF). To date, the VFF has approved exceptions for all three name change applications.
MerryLand Quy Nhon Binh Dinh FC will change its name starting from round 4 of the V.League. They will be playing away against Hanoi FC.
