In June 2022, the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) learned through a European spy agency that a group of six Ukrainian special forces intended to blow up a natural gas pipeline connecting Russia and Germany.
The information was shared on the Discord chat platform, allegedly by Jack Teixeira - a member of the Air National Guard recently arrested in connection with the leak of sensitive US documents.
The Washington Post said it received a copy from one of Teixeira’s online friends. The intelligence report was based on information obtained from an individual in Ukraine and the CIA shared the report with Germany and other European countries last June.
The specifics, including the number of special forces and the method of attack, mean that for nearly a year, Western allies have had reason to suspect Kiev was behind the sabotage.
Officials from multiple countries have confirmed that the intelligence brief posted on Discord accurately outlined what European intelligence agencies shared with the CIA.
In September 2022, underwater explosions ruptured the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines. The explosions occurred in the economic zones of Sweden and Denmark. Both countries said the explosions were intentional, but it is still unclear who was responsible.
Washington and NATO have called the incident an "act of sabotage", while Russia has blamed the West, but neither side has provided evidence of who carried out the attacks.
