"I am honored to announce that I will be traveling to Paris on December 7th to attend the grand reopening of the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral, which was completely restored after a fire five years ago. It will be a very special day," US President-elect Donald Trump wrote on the social network Truth on December 2nd.

He also praised the French leader: "President Emmanuel Macron has done a wonderful job restoring Notre Dame to its former glory and beyond."

Notre Dame Cathedral was severely damaged in a fire in 2019. The reopening ceremony of Notre Dame Cathedral is expected to be attended by about 50 heads of state and high-ranking officials from around the world .

Reuters , citing a source familiar with the matter, said the French government had invited the US President-elect to attend the ceremony. Mr Trump’s team had been discussing the visit with the office of French President Emmanuel Macron for several days.

This will be Mr Trump's first foreign visit since winning the US presidential election last month.

The news came shortly after Mr Trump announced his choice of his in-law Charles Kushner as US ambassador to France.

CNN recently reported that President Macron is planning to invite Mr. Trump, and Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to Paris for an artificial intelligence summit in early February.
