(Dan Tri) - Experts believe that US President-elect Donald Trump wants to use Greenland to expand Washington's military presence in the Arctic.

President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly said that Greenland, the world's largest island, should become part of the United States to ensure national security and defense against threats from China and Russia.
Mr Trump said that "it is absolutely necessary to own and control Greenland". He also left open the possibility of using military force to control this territory.
Alexander Mikhailov, head of the Bureau of Military and Political Analysis, told Russia's Tass news agency that Trump's plan to annex Greenland poses certain risks to military and political stability in the Arctic, especially turning Greenland into "a new seriously militarized zone."
“This territory will be used to expand the US military presence. Danish politicians claim that they sent a message to Mr. Trump, in which they offered to cooperate on a security agreement, in fact on the placement of US weapons,” Mr. Mikhailov said.
Geopolitical potential
The Trump administration's move in Greenland stems from the region's geopolitical potential, experts explain.
"Today, Russia, with its vast territory, owns almost half of the Arctic region. In addition, Russia is very actively developing the Northern Sea Route (NSR)," the analyst said.
"The US cannot allow this. Once again, Russia is very active in strengthening the Arctic militarily. There is a Russian base in Franz-Josef. Military aircraft and air defense and anti-missile systems are deployed in the northwest of the country. We are strengthening the Far East and the Kuril Islands," Mikhailov added.
According to Mr. Mikhailov, Mr. Trump of course "sees all this."
"He decided to change the situation globally. He has said many times that he wants to make America great again. He has realized that within its current borders, America will never be great again," the expert explained.

The importance of Greenland
According to Mr. Mikhailov, Greenland has special significance for the United States.
“This territory is very large. Many places are barren and icy, but in certain places on the island there are NATO military bases. The most important of these are NATO radar-missile defense systems. Naturally, the United States tends to see this territory as a potential area, for example, medium-range missiles can fly over the Arctic, following a shorter route, hitting various targets anywhere inside Russian territory,” the expert emphasized.
According to Mr. Mikhailov, "in this respect, Greenland is a new territory."
"First, to deploy American missile defense systems. Second, to be able to deploy offensive weapons, precisely medium- and short-range missiles. Third, this territory is very important for economic development. The Americans have repeatedly argued with Russia about the Arctic continental shelf, about the future extraction of natural resources from the bottom of the Arctic Ocean in general," Mikhailov said.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark with a population of just 57,000, is rich in mineral, oil and natural gas resources. However, the island's economy depends on fishing and annual subsidies from Denmark, so it has grown relatively slowly.
The US maintains a permanent military presence at Pituffik Air Base in northwest Greenland. The acquisition of the territory could increase tensions with Russia and put the US in direct competition with China, which has increased its mining activities in the Arctic region in recent years.
