Da Nang Mr. Ngo Duy Trinh (FPT Software) completed a 2.7 million USD project with 150 employees in 7 months thanks to the viewpoint of "viewing software projects as a battle that can only be won".
This is FPT Software’s largest fixed-price contract project in 2020, in cooperation with an energy company headquartered in Nagoya, Japan. Mr. Trinh commented that businesses from this country are very demanding in terms of process, quality and commitment period. The project officially started in early April 2020 and must ensure progress to be completed in November of the same year.
The male engineer recounted that when the project entered its most difficult phase, he and his teammates defied everything to "play a life-or-death game", not missing any "narrow openings" to turn their work into a great milestone for the company.
"We have no way back, no choice. We can only move forward," added Mr. Duy Trinh - Project Manager at FPT Software Da Nang.

In the third month of implementation, Covid-19 broke out for the second time in Vietnam, at the same time, Da Nang became the epicenter and the F-Complex Da Nang headquarters also recorded the first F0 case. After just one night, all 150 engineers of the project had to work from home according to the directive, running the project while self-isolating and monitoring.
The team was scattered, making it difficult to control and monitor the project. At this time, project manager Ngo Duy Trinh had to take on the responsibility of connecting 150 people through a laptop screen. He faced a series of questions such as how to ensure progress and productivity when employees worked remotely, how to choose an effective communication and work management platform, etc.
However, the former student of FPT University believes that no challenge can be too difficult for him. Since his student days, he has been accustomed to studying his major while learning how to solve and troubleshoot practical problems.
"Like many of my peers at school, I was not too overwhelmed when I entered the workforce and faced challenges at work. I think it was my luck to choose to study at FPT University and work hard to train," he added.
Mr. Trinh solved the "problem" of connecting hundreds of project engineers in the midst of the pandemic by stopping innovation to flexibly adapt to the situation. 8x deployed a tool so that members could create daily productivity reports, while the department head monitored the progress of each individual. He also quickly formed work groups and set meeting times via Webex.
The male engineer shared that the group often updates on the working group until late at night, even at 2am; there are funny situations when from employees to bosses are sitting at home in shorts, wearing headphones and fiercely debating in front of the online screen...
"The culture at FPT is like that, so open that it is completely unconstrained by hierarchy, effective work is what matters," he added.
Mr. Duy Trinh added that since his time as a student at FPT University, he had the opportunity to study in an environment with an international curriculum, diverse experiential activities and respect for individual differences. Therefore, when he graduated and joined FPT Software, he was not surprised by this openness and emphasis on work efficiency.

As a manager, Mr. Duy Trinh also makes the most of that "open" culture to effectively connect employees in the unit. The model of connecting 150 project engineers working online that he deployed in the midst of the Covid-19 "storm" has worked very effectively. The team is dispersed but not distant; individuals are self-motivated, the collective is strongly united, so productivity and work progress are maintained as when working directly.
At the end of 2020, the project was handed over to the customer to the overwhelming joy of the whole team. Mr. Trinh and his teammates became the symbols of the company's brave "warriors" overcoming Covid-19. After this miracle, Mr. Trinh was also trusted by his superiors to manage many other important projects.
Currently, Mr. Trinh holds the position of Business Unit Leader (Software Development Unit Leader) of FPT Software Da Nang. Accordingly, the difficulties and challenges are increasing, proportional to the assigned position. Therefore, he tells himself that he must constantly improve, learn, innovate to develop himself and meet the job requirements.
"That is one of the skills I have accumulated since studying at FPT University. The school not only teaches professional knowledge but also equips students with the ability to self-study and how to adapt to new situations," the male engineer shared.
