Map of the journey of a meteorite across the sky of 3 US states on July 16.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said it was possible that a meteorite had just exploded above Manhattan, New York City at that time.
However, the meteor explosion in the sky could not explain the shaking on the ground, nor the loud bang. NASA also recorded reports of about 20 fireballs in the sky, according to Fox News.
Based on data from the American Meteorite Society, Bill Cooke, head of NASA's Meteorite Environment Office, estimated that the first fireball appeared around 10 a.m. near the New Jersey-New York border.
"We now have a (corrected trajectory) of an asteroid originating above New York City and moving west into New Jersey. Speeds are over 61,000 km/h," NASA's Meteorite Tracker wrote on Facebook.
This is just preliminary information. NASA said that no meteorites hit the ground during this event, meaning New York City did not experience any meteorite impacts on streets, homes, or pedestrians.
"There was information that the military was in the vicinity at the time of the fireball, which would explain the shaking and loud bangs reported online," Cooke said.
According to information provided to FOX 5 NY, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said it received information about shaking in northern New Jersey and Staten Island, but so far has not received direct evidence to help determine the cause.
