Kazakhstan has hosted this forum since 2017. To date, only Kazakhstan's Astana forum has yielded significant and necessary results for ending the war and civil conflict, and restoring peace , security, and stability in Syria.
Astana Forum 2018
Kazakhstan offered two main reasons for this decision. Firstly, the Astana forum framework in Kazakhstan has essentially established peace, security, and stability in Syria. This means the Astana framework has fulfilled its historical mission, and subsequent issues related to Syria can be handled within other international forums elsewhere. Secondly, Syria has recently begun normalizing relations with regional countries and rejoining the Arab League, thus eliminating the need for the Astana framework to address domestic and foreign affairs.
The reasons given by Kazakhstan are not far-fetched and are not without merit. However, the Astana forum framework on Syria has built international credibility and proven effective, so maintaining it would be very beneficial for the future of Syria and for peace, security, and stability in the region. Therefore, Kazakhstan's decision is essentially aimed at distancing itself from Russia, Iran, and Syria. Through this, Kazakhstan is trying to win over the US and Western countries. This decision is mainly related to the war in Ukraine and signals that Kazakhstan is reorienting its policy towards Russia, the US, and the West for the present and the post-war period in Ukraine.
