Vietcetera's Hundred Years of Theater program is a project to foster the audience's love for all types of theater, especially traditional theater.
The first season focuses on the art of reformed opera with guests: People's Artist Kim Cuong, People's Artist Bach Tuyet, Meritorious Artist Huu Chau, Meritorious Artist Le Thien, director Hong Dung. The program is hosted by journalist and screenwriter Tran Minh (Binh Bong Bot).
However, as soon as it aired, the show received backlash from viewers about the host as well as copyright issues and the use of offensive footage.
MC was criticized for being "inappropriate" and disrespectful to veteran artists.
In the episode aired at the end of March entitled "The Cai Luong Stage is Reviving Strongly", when talking with Meritorious Artist Huu Chau, MC Binh Bong Bot was accused of disrespecting veteran artists, as he leaned back, crossed his legs, and continuously talked about the guest.
In addition, instead of choosing open questions for artists to share and express themselves, he asked the question "Is Cai Luong dying?" which made the guests uncomfortable.
Along with that, viewers were even more upset when the male MC made the comparison: "Reformed opera, I see its life is relatively short. For example, I will take Thanh Nga as an example, she lived a very short life". This question was commented by many people as disrespectful to the deceased and touched the pain of the guest (Meritorious Artist Huu Chau is the nephew of artist Thanh Nga).
In another episode with guest artist - reformed opera composer Kim Cuong, MC Binh Bong Bot asked the veteran artist an insensitive question: "Because I sing badly, I switched to drama, right?" . In response to the unserious question, People's Artist Kim Cuong acted seriously and at the same time refuted this point of view...
Most of the audience considers Hundred Years of Stage to be a very meaningful program with a cast of famous guests. However, the way MC Binh Bong Bot leads is a huge minus point, causing anger among viewers.
Many viewers harshly criticized, declaring to "turn their backs" on the program: "I really love Vietcetera's programs and have high expectations for the podcast series Hundred Years of Stage. But with the host's rash statements and actions in the program, I would like to refuse to follow anything related to the host until Vietcetera has a correct and reasonable statement.
Cai luong is the quintessence of national culture, the artists are bright gems that need respect and sincerity. Although the purpose of the program is good, the host has lost the original humanistic meaning, instead creating unnecessary controversy. I hope Vietcetera will have a civilized, clear and correct way to handle it."
An audience member expressed his opinion: "You guys make the show without censorship? The host's demeanor and words are so rude, I feel like the artists are sitting there trying to endure the host's rudeness and limited understanding."
Changing the host of the show is a request from the majority of the audience: "We suggest that the show change the host, we are educated and cultured people, we cannot accept such disrespectful and insolent actions towards our elders. A step backwards for the entire Vietcetera team"; "The show is really good and meaningful, but I hope the show changes the host. This Binh guy talks more "impulsively" than his name, or to put it bluntly, he lacks thinking and sophistication",...
There were also viewers who spoke up in defense: "This is really a difficult job for Mr. Binh because throughout his career, he has not been a host too much. So it is understandable that he lacks experience in this position. I just hope he accepts useful and constructive comments so that he can improve himself in this new job."
"Mr. Binh only has one thing to adjust to make this project more successful, which is to choose a different way of presenting. From the simple perspective of an audience, I want to hear the artists talk more about their profession, about Cai Luong, a very good and beautiful art form of the nation. I believe that is also the purpose and meaning of this project. So instead of asking questions and open-ended questions that I think tend to be a bit imposing, you should ask questions that give the artists more momentum to tell more about Cai Luong. I will still follow this project, thank you Vietcetera for bringing Cai Luong closer to young people like me," a viewer commented.
Use of disturbing footage
Along with the controversy over MC Binh Bong Bot, the crew of Tram Nam Chua Kiem was also accused of using footage from the Hat Boi 101 project of Hieu Van Ngu - an organization that is trying to introduce and help young audiences understand more about the essence of Hat Boi, for illustration but without permission and not for the right purpose.
A representative of the Hieu Van Ngu organization said that using footage glorifying hát bội to criticize this genre is "not in line with its purpose and harms the operating principles of Hieu Van Ngu."
Hieu Van Ngu Organization also added: "The use of the above footage does not properly represent the performance nature of hát bội; in addition, the guest is comparing cải lương - hát bội, making hát bội somewhat "inferior" and this is something we do not want. We respect the diversity of performance and performance forms, respect the connection between cải lương and hát bội, respect the efforts of the production crew, but never want to "drown" one form to honor another."
Previously, Tram Nam Nhat Khoi caused controversy when comparing Hat Boi and Cai Luong in episode 2 of True and Beautiful Truth from Cai Luong to Daily Life . In the conversation between MC Binh Bong Bot and director Hong Dung, they shared: " Hat Boi uses Chinese characters that are not understandable, and the way it is sung does not allow people to hear the words, so people cannot feel the character. Unless it is a story, people already know and can imagine what the story and character on stage are saying. Cai Luong helps people listen and understand the plot and characters, and through the music of Cai Luong, people feel it is more comfortable and closer".
Immediately after Hieu Van Ngu's post, Vietcetera, the production company of the show "A Hundred Years of Stages" , sent an apology and proposed a solution related to this incident. According to Hieu Van Ngu, the editing team from the " A Hundred Years of Stages" crew should have cut out the scene from Hieu Van Ngu's "Hat Boi 101" from the official video of episode 2 - "Truth Ly That Va Dep" from Cai Luong to Doi Thuong". Up to now, the scene about Hieu Van Ngu's "Hat Boi" has been removed from the show.
