Ba Vi is one of the localities in Hanoi that owns many famous products. Typical products with strong local imprints such as dried tea buds, cow's milk, ostrich meat and ham, hill chicken, honey, dong vermicelli... have long become the region's own strengths.
In particular, these products are increasingly enhanced when included in the One Commune One Product (OCOP) Program for sustainable development.
Affirming value through OCOP
Van Hoa Commune (Ba Vi District) is one of the few localities where people raise ostriches. Mr. Phan Ngoc Tu, an ostrich farmer in Van Hoa Commune, shared that this profession has developed strongly thanks to the presence of the Ba Vi Ostrich Breeding Research Station, under the Thuy Phuong Poultry Research Center (Animal Husbandry Institute). Thanks to this research station, people can easily access breeds and techniques to develop family farming. When the ostrich farming profession flourished, Van Hoa people expanded their services to sell ostrich meat, eggs and ham to the market. Currently, along the Tan Linh - Yen Bai route through Van Hoa, dozens of shops have been established specializing in selling and introducing ostrich meat and ham, attracting the attention of tourists.
Mr. Phan Ngoc Tu's family has cooperated with about 10 ostrich farming households in the commune in the product consumption stage. "On average, I slaughter an ostrich weighing from 100kg to 150kg every day, both to sell meat and to make ham. My family's Tu Huong branded ostrich ham has participated in the evaluation, classification and has been certified as an OCOP product" - Mr. Tu shared.
Not only has the advantage of raising ostriches, mentioning Ba Vi means mentioning dairy farming and processing cow's milk into fresh milk products, yogurt, milk cakes... Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Huyen, Director of Chi Vang Milk Joint Stock Company (Tan Linh commune) shared: "The potential for raising dairy cows in Ba Vi, especially in mountainous communes such as Yen Bai, Van Hoa, Tan Linh is very large, but the consumption of cow's milk is facing many difficulties. Therefore, I am determined to pursue the field of milk processing for more sustainable development".
Currently, every day, Chi Vang Milk Joint Stock Company purchases 5-6 tons of fresh milk from more than 100 households in Tan Linh commune to process more than 20 types of products. To date, 20 products of the Company have participated in evaluation, classification and OCOP certification.
In Ba Vi commune, where more than 90% of the population is Dao ethnic group, people have taken advantage of their experience in growing, harvesting and processing medicinal herbs to develop OCOP products. Physicians Ly Thi Bich Phuong and Ly Thi Bich Hue have encouraged the Dao community to join hands to establish the Phuong Hue Dao Ethnic Herbal Cooperative. The cooperative has been successful in developing and processing 4 types of tea that meet 3-star OCOP standards, including: Spoon tea, Solanum procumbens tea, Khoi leaf tea, Gam vine tea... In Ba Trai commune, where the agricultural production area is mainly tea, people have developed OCOP products of dried tea buds...
Head of Ba Vi District Economic Department Nguyen Giap Dong said that Ba Vi has very favorable natural conditions for agricultural development, especially in 7 mountainous communes with large land areas and cool climate. In recent years, Ba Vi district has promoted agricultural development, especially building brands for many local OCOP products. Up to now, the district has nearly 200 OCOP products, including many products that are specialties of Ba Vi, such as wild flower honey, red sticky rice turmeric starch, Yen Bai grapefruit, Tan Vien plum wine, meat products - ostrich ham, hill chicken, cow's milk, goat's milk, etc.
Enriching the people
The OCOP program has helped people increase the value of their products, develop the economy, and become rich. Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Yen Bai Commune, said that the commune currently has two OCOP products: grapefruit and tea. Notably, Phu Yen village of the commune has 200 households, each family owns a grapefruit garden. Many households also combine intercropping, growing grapefruit above and tea below, helping each household earn hundreds of millions of VND per year.
Mr. Bui Van Lap, owner of a 7,000m² grapefruit garden with 300 fruit-laden trees in Phu Yen village, shared: “My family grows Tam Van grapefruit (early ripening) and Dien grapefruit (late ripening) according to VietGAP standards. I compost my own compost from manure, soak soybeans, corn, fish, etc. to supplement organic nitrogen for the plants. Because I grow many varieties of grapefruit, from the eighth lunar month, my family has started harvesting grapefruit to sell gradually until Tet, avoiding the pressure at the end of the year. The consumption process is not as stressful as when growing only one variety.”
Recently, Minh Quang is the first commune out of 7 communes in the mountainous ethnic minority area of Ba Vi district to be assessed by the city's New Rural Area Assessment Team as eligible to meet advanced new rural standards in 2024. According to Chairman of Minh Quang Commune People's Committee Nguyen Tien Tha, people in the commune develop many occupations, including growing cassava and making vermicelli. This is a rural economic development model in the direction of integrating multiple economic, cultural and environmental values. Currently, the area of cassava cultivation in Minh Quang is up to 180 hectares, attracting 175/289 households in Minh Hong village to participate. Minh Hong cassava vermicelli products have been recognized as OCOP by the city and Ba Vi district in 2020 and re-evaluated in 2023. Since being certified, Minh Hong cassava vermicelli has been supported to complete the production process, beautiful packaging, clear traceability, and a stable distribution channel. According to the commune's assessment, the income of households growing cassava and vermicelli is 15-20 times higher than that of rice growing.
Mr. Tran Quang Khuyen, Vice Chairman of Ba Vi District People's Committee affirmed that the OCOP Program not only creates quality products and services, but also contributes significantly to improving people's income and life. OCOP helps effectively implement the criteria group "Economy and production organization" in building new rural areas, thereby gradually changing production practices, orienting people to participate in the market economy, opening up new directions for local traditional products, supporting the restructuring of the agricultural economy.
Mr. Tran Quang Khuyen suggested that entities with products classified as OCOP continue to invest and apply technology to production, constantly improve quality, expand production scale, and at the same time promote and expand product consumption markets.
Currently, Ba Vi still has many agricultural products and specialties associated with the villages, which is a great potential for developing the OCOP program. In the coming time, Ba Vi district will continue to promote propaganda, mobilization and support for subjects to choose products to participate in the program. At the same time, the district will strengthen the construction of linkage chains and develop large-scale raw material areas to create favorable conditions for the development of OCOP products. The district will also focus on promoting and introducing products, supporting subjects to build brands, and striving to bring the district's OCOP products to the export market.
