On July 1, the final round of the Vietnamese piano and singing competition for Vietnamese children and teenagers across Europe (V-Stella 2023) took place in London (UK) with the participation of 27 contestants from 8 European countries.

According to the head of the V-Stella 2023 Organizing Committee, Pham Ha My, this is the first piano and vocal competition for Vietnamese people in Europe organized by Ha My Academy, aiming to find Vietnamese musical talents and preserve the Vietnamese language in the Vietnamese community in the UK and Europe.

At the same time, V-Stella 2023 also aims to spread classical music closer to Vietnamese audiences abroad.

As part of the events celebrating 50 years of Vietnam-UK diplomatic relations, the competition includes four categories: Piano 1 and vocal 1 for contestants aged 5-12; and Piano 2 and vocal 2 for teenagers aged 13-20.

To reach the live final in London, the 27 contestants went through two online rounds, in which they submitted performance video clips for selection by the judges.

The piano jury includes Dr. Nguyen Anh Tung, Dr. Hsin-I Huang and Ms. Tania Park. The vocal jury includes singer Jitka Svobodova, Ms. Oksana Lepska and Ms. Meliza Metzger-Gómez.

In the final round, the contestants' performances will be evaluated by the judges on 6 factors: Talent; prospect; technique, level; musical performance ability and artistic personality.

At the end of the contest, the organizing committee awarded 3 first prizes, 4 second prizes, 5 third prizes and two honorary prizes to contestants in 4 categories.

Head of the Organizing Committee Pham Ha My, founder of Hamy Academy, said that the Organizing Committee hopes that the competition will create a professional and healthy music playground, honor and support young musical talents, and at the same time preserve traditional culture in young generations of Vietnamese people in Europe.

Ms. Ha My said the competition will continue to be held every two years, creating opportunities for contestants to assess their abilities and test their abilities on the path of pursuing professional art.

Ms. Ha My added that although it was held for the first time, the quality of contestants in both the piano and vocal competitions was very good, especially the contestants in the piano category.

Vocal judge Jitka Svobodova, a singer from the Czech National Theatre, shared that she was really impressed by the talent and performance ability of the Vietnamese contestants and was very happy to be part of the competition's jury.

Piano judge Nguyen Anh Tung, PhD majoring in piano performance, University of Oregon (USA), also highly appreciated the quality of the contestants, saying that the contestants had prepared thoroughly and had made remarkable progress in the past 6 months of 3 rounds.

Dr. Tung believes that the competition is a playground for young contestants to demonstrate their talents and train themselves to conquer other challenges in future competitions both in their home country and in the European Union.

The champion of the piano category 2, Hoang Kim Gia Bao, 14 years old, from Hungary, said that he participated in the competition because this is an event that connects the Vietnamese community in Europe and was very surprised and honored to win the highest prize, especially when the other contestants also played very well.

Mr. Pham Minh Nam, Director of Nam&Co., a sponsor of the contest, shared that as a long-time overseas Vietnamese in the UK, he always wishes to see the development and success of the second and third generations of Vietnamese people in the UK as well as in Europe, while still preserving the traditions of his homeland and country, always remembering his roots.

This is the reason he sponsored V-Stella 2023, a contest to honor Vietnamese talents and preserve the Vietnamese language in the overseas Vietnamese community.
