The ASSET project harnesses the potential of agroecology in Southeast Asia to transform agricultural and food systems into more sustainable, especially safer and more inclusive ones. In Vietnam, the ASSET project is implemented in 2 provinces: Dien Bien and Son La. The project implementation period is from 2020 to 2025, with field activities starting in 2022. The project implements 7 main support activities, including: Developing green fodder and livestock; Improving feed safety; Developing quality coffee; Protecting crops towards agroecology; Developing value chain recognition; Capacity building for local partners (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development; Agricultural agencies in project districts); Communication and raising awareness of agroecology.
Project vision to 2030, functional value chain based on quality and ecological agriculture contributes to improving the livelihoods of local farming communities.
The representative of the AFD delegation presented the outstanding results of 7 support activities of the ASSET Project being implemented in Dien Bien province. At the same time, the activities are expected to be implemented in 2024.
Accordingly, after nearly 3 years of implementation, the project has supported livestock farmers in: Growing grass, fermenting animal feed; composting livestock manure, contributing to the treatment of livestock environment; especially reducing the pressure on livestock waste treatment, helping localities complete criteria 17.8 and 17.9 in building new rural areas. Through crop support activities, people have access to methods of intercropping multi-purpose crops with long-term industrial crops, helping to increase income, promote the development of ecological agriculture and circular agriculture in the coming time.
Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Thanh Do highly appreciated the results of the ASSET Project's activities in Dien Bien province. At the same time, he hoped that in the coming time, AFD would continue to support the implementation and share experiences in the production of ecological, circular, multi-value agricultural models associated with the improvement of rural environmental landscapes. Combining production development with eco-tourism and resorts in the province, focusing on a number of contents such as: Researching solutions for the most sustainable development of macadamia and coffee trees; considering supporting research and building models for planting some temperate fruit trees (pears, apples, etc.); continuing to expand activities to develop planting and processing green forage trees for livestock; environmental treatment solutions in household livestock farming; improving and enhancing the productivity and quality of buffalo and cow breeds. Support investigation and preliminary assessment of potential and capacity for forest carbon absorption and storage services in special-use forests and concentrated protection forests and prepare necessary conditions to implement absorption, storage and greenhouse gas emission reduction services from limiting deforestation and forest degradation; sustainable management and growth when there are policies and supporting capital sources.
