At exactly 7:05 p.m. (local time) on November 26, the plane carrying President Vo Van Thuong and his wife Phan Thi Thanh Tam landed at Haneda International Airport, Tokyo, beginning an official visit to Japan from November 27-30.

Welcoming the President and his wife at the airport, from the Japanese side were Ambassador Yamada Takio and his wife; Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan Komura Masahiro; Director of the Protocol Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Shimada; Director General of the Asia-Oceania Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Director of Haneda International Airport.

On the Vietnamese side, there were Ambassador Pham Quang Hieu and his wife, along with officials and staff of the Embassy; and representatives of the Vietnamese community in Japan.

This is the first visit to Japan by President Vo Van Thuong in his new position and also the fourth visit to Japan by a Vietnamese President since the two countries established diplomatic relations.

Taking place at a very important moment in the relationship between the two countries, the visit to Japan by President Vo Van Thuong and his wife contributes to further deepening the political, diplomatic, economic, trade and investment relations between the two countries, further promoting cooperation in new areas such as green transformation, innovation, digital transformation, contributing to strengthening the relationship between the two countries for the benefit of the people of the two countries and for peace, cooperation and development in the region, as well as around the world.

Overseas Vietnamese welcomed President Vo Van Thuong and his wife to Tokyo, beginning an official visit to Japan.

President Vo Van Thuong and his wife will meet with the Emperor and Empress of Japan; meet with the President of the Senate and the President of the House of Representatives of Japan and deliver an important speech at the Japanese Parliament; attend the ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic relations; and receive leaders of several Japanese political parties and politicians.

In Tokyo, the President spent time meeting and talking with officials and staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan; met with representatives of generations of Vietnamese people in Japan who have made many contributions; received the leadership of the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentarians' Union; and attended an exchange program of Vietnamese Vovinam martial arts and Japanese martial arts.

During his working program in Fukuoka, President Vo Van Thuong will receive the Governor, Chairman of the Fukuoka Council and leaders of the provinces in the Kyushu region; meet with officials and staff of the Consulate General of Vietnam in Fukuoka and the Vietnamese community in the Kyushu region; receive leaders of the Kyushu-Vietnam Friendship Association; receive leaders of the Japan-Vietnam Experts Association; visit Kyushu University and the Center for Research and Development of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology.

In an interview about the significance of the visit, Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Pham Quang Hieu emphasized that both Vietnam and Japan highly value this visit of President Vo Van Thuong.

This is an opportunity for the two countries' senior leaders to discuss and agree on major directions and specific measures to bring the Vietnam-Japan Extensive Strategic Partnership to a new stage of development that is stronger, more comprehensive, more substantial and more effective, meeting the interests and aspirations of the people of the two countries, and actively contributing to peace, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

Taking place at the moment of the half-century anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations, the visit is a very important event in a series of commemorative activities.

Sharing about the important milestone between the two countries, Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Yamada Takio hopes: “When looking back at the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Japan-Vietnam diplomatic relations, future generations will evaluate the anniversary year as a meaningful year that created a foundation for the relationship between the two countries, which has unlimited potential, to develop even further, towards the future, reaching out to the world as partners of equal status”.
