The meeting took place on the occasion of the two countries celebrating the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations (1973 - 2023) and the 6th anniversary of establishing the Comprehensive Partnership (2017 - 2023).

President Vo Van Thuong and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shared their assessment that the Vietnam-Canada Comprehensive Partnership continues to develop, especially with two-way trade turnover increasing sharply in recent times (reaching over 7 billion USD in 2022, up nearly 17% compared to 2021), Vietnam is Canada's largest trading partner in ASEAN and Canada is Vietnam's second largest trading partner in the Americas.

Cooperation in education and training and people-to-people exchange continues to be strongly promoted. With nearly 20,000 international students studying in Canada, Vietnam currently ranks 8th in the number of international students studying in Canada.

The community of 300,000 Vietnamese people living and working in Canada is an increasingly important bridge between the two countries.

In order to continue promoting deeper, more stable and practical cooperation, the President suggested that the two sides maintain high-level exchanges and all-level exchanges, enhance cooperation between localities, and maintain existing dialogue mechanisms on politics - diplomacy, national defense - security, economy - trade.

The President also asked the Prime Minister and the Canadian Government to continue creating favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community to live and work in Canada. At the same time, Canada will continue to support Vietnam to participate more actively and effectively in the field of peacekeeping operations (PKO).

President Vo Van Thuong said Vietnam welcomes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to visit Vietnam in the near future.

Prime Minister Trudeau shared President Vo Van Thuong's opinions on the situation and development orientation of bilateral relations, affirmed that Canada attaches importance to relations with Vietnam, and expressed his impression of Vietnam's economic growth rate.

In the context of many challenges, Canada will continue to prioritize promoting relations with Vietnam, especially in the fields of politics-diplomacy, economics-trade, education-training, national defense-security and people-to-people exchange. Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his pleasure if he could arrange to return to visit Vietnam in the near future.

At the meeting, the two leaders discussed a number of international and regional issues of mutual concern, including the East Sea issue. Both sides affirmed that they will continue to strengthen cooperation and support each other at multilateral forums, including the United Nations and APEC, and promote the role of international law.
