President of the Swiss National Council arrives in Hanoi, starting official visit to Vietnam

On the afternoon of June 27, President of the Swiss National Council Martin Candinas arrived in Hanoi, beginning an official visit to Vietnam from June 27-30 at the invitation of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.

Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs Committee Don Tuan Phong and Swiss Ambassador to Vietnam Thomas Gass welcomed the delegation at Noi Bai International Airport.

Accompanying the President of the Swiss National Council on his visit to Vietnam were First Vice President of the Swiss National Council Eric Nussbaumer, Second Vice President of the Swiss National Council Maja Riniker, Secretary General of the Swiss Parliament Philippe Schwab, Member of Parliament Ida Glanzmann and a number of other officials.

Martin Candinas, President of the Swiss National Council, was born on August 20, 1980. He was the founder and President of the Young Christian Democratic People's Party, Survelva, Switzerland; Member of the Surselva Regional Council, Committee for Social Affairs, Culture and Sports ; Member of the Standing Committee of the Swiss Christian Democratic People's Party/The Centre Switzerland...

He served as Second Vice President, then First Vice President of the Swiss National Council; Vice President of the Administrative Delegation. Since 2022, he has served as President of the Swiss National Council.

The official visit to Vietnam by the President of the Swiss National Council demonstrates Switzerland's respect for Vietnam. Switzerland wishes to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, especially in the fields of economy and trade, and strives towards signing a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). This is also an important parliamentary foreign affairs activity to resume high-level delegation exchanges between the two countries after the Covid-19 pandemic.

For Vietnam, welcoming the President of the Swiss National Council aims to affirm Vietnam's consistent policy of always attaching importance to the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Switzerland; wishing to deepen the close and trusting relationship between the two countries in all fields; promoting economic-trade-investment cooperation; at the same time wishing to soon complete and put into effect the EFTA Agreement; further promoting cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries, making bilateral parliamentary cooperation increasingly effective and substantive.

According to the program, during the visit, President of the Swiss National Council Martin is expected to attend the official welcoming ceremony and hold talks with National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.

The President of the Swiss National Council will pay a courtesy call to President Vo Van Thuong and meet with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh; and work with Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien.

President of the Swiss National Council Martin Candinas will also have working sessions in several localities of Vietnam and a number of other sideline activities.
