FPT's $1 billion revenue from IT services from overseas markets comes mainly from three key markets: Japan, the Americas and Asia-Pacific.

Going abroad is bringing Vietnamese knowledge and digital technology to open up new frontiers.

At the Conference on Vietnamese Digital Technology Enterprises Going Abroad in February 2023, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung emphasized: The Ministry of Information and Communications will launch a campaign to support digital technology enterprises operating abroad or going abroad.

According to the Minister, going abroad is to bring Vietnam's knowledge and digital technology to expand the frontier. Going abroad is for Vietnam to contribute to the development of humanity. Without going abroad, without competing, without conquering, without revenue from foreign markets, Vietnam cannot become a developed country with high income.

Following the "call" of Minister Nguyen Manh Hung, the Vietnamese IT industry had a successful year with more than 1,500 digital technology enterprises achieving revenue from foreign markets, an increase of more than 7% compared to 2022. Total revenue from foreign markets is estimated at 7.5 billion USD, an increase of 4% compared to 2022. Revenue from concentrated information technology parks is about 15 million USD/ha/year, about 15 times higher than that of industrial parks.

Google's report assessed that Vietnam's digital economic growth rate is the fastest in Southeast Asia for two consecutive years (28% in 2022 and 19% in 2023), 3.5 times higher than the GDP growth rate. The Ministry of Information and Communications estimates that the proportion of the digital economy in Vietnam's GDP in 2023 will reach 16.5%.

Among successful IT enterprises in foreign markets, FPT is the most mentioned name in the last months of 2023 when it reached the milestone of 1 billion USD in software export revenue. This figure has brought FPT into the group of billion-dollar IT service enterprises, affirming its ability to implement projects of hundreds of millions of USD for the world's leading corporations, marking Vietnamese intelligence globally.

FPT's $1 billion in overseas IT services revenue has doubled in three years, mainly coming from three key markets: Japan, the Americas and Asia-Pacific. To date, these markets have all grown by over 30%. Of which, the Japanese market has grown by 54%, driven by the large demand for IT spending in this market, especially spending on digital transformation.

FPT representative said that in recent years, FPT's IT services in foreign markets have shifted strongly to higher stages in the technology value chain, with 50% of total revenue from abroad coming from digital transformation services and increasing nearly 6 times in the past 5 years. In particular, focusing on new technologies such as Cloud - accounting for 40% of digital transformation service revenue, other technologies such as AI, data analysis accounting for 12%; RPA & Lowcode accounting for 10%...

To succeed in the international market, FPT has taken many important steps such as: Cooperating with major partners in many fields; Improving technological capacity in specialized fields (domains); Improving human resources and technology as core competitive strength.

Aspiration for national prosperity through technology

Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of FPT, said that 1 billion USD is not just a number but the life and youth of FPT people. FPT has done a lot to bring Vietnamese intelligence abroad, marking the map of Vietnam on the world digital map.

“35 years ago, we said our wish was to contribute to the prosperity of the country through science and technology. At that time, we did not know what software was, but the idea of advancing through technology to help people and the country live better has not changed since then until today. At first, we just tried to survive and support each other. 10 years later, we started thinking about how to have a technological base for development and that was Hoa Lac. At that time, we did not know what Hoa Lac was and spent time looking for land for the high-tech park. When the high-tech park was established, the idea of what to do in this area arose. At that time, India gave us a lesson. We studied India very carefully and I believed that we could do it. But we failed, failed and failed. The turning point for us was meeting a leader of Sumitomo and it opened the way for FPT to enter the Japanese market,” said Mr. Truong Gia Binh.

Continuing to share about this story, Mr. Pham Minh Tuan, General Director of Fsoft said: The 1 billion USD milestone is very emotional, but it is not as emotional as reaching 1 million USD from software export, because that is the life and death milestone of FPT.

“I was the first to go, after the first failure, I had to return. At that time, there were many opinions within us. After 3 years, reaching the 1 million USD mark, we had the confidence to continue. We stopped at 100 million USD. But when the earthquake and tsunami happened, we stood side by side with our Japanese partners with the saying: Only when the Japanese leave Japan will we return to Vietnam. After that, we achieved strong growth again. After reaching 500 million USD, we knew that 1 billion USD was within our ability. Now, Vietnam has become the second largest software exporting country in the world after India,” Mr. Pham Minh Tuan shared.

In the journey of bringing Vietnamese intelligence abroad, many people have asked what is the strength for FPT to compete with international rivals. A leader of Sumitomo himself, after retiring and joining FPT, spent 8 months looking for the secret that FPT could compete with its rivals, but could not find it. However, that leader realized that FPT has a passionate and ambitious spirit, spreading from the leaders to each sales staff, and this could be FPT's secret that is difficult to copy for other companies.

Fsoft Chairman said that FPT currently has contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars and is looking for contracts worth billions of dollars. FPT is aiming to become a global company and must have contracts worth billions of dollars, revenue worth billions of dollars from one market and profits worth billions of dollars.

Surpassing the 1 billion USD milestone, FPT has a bigger ambition to step up to a higher level in the group of billion-dollar IT service enterprises, with the next milestone of 5 billion USD in IT service revenue for foreign markets by 2030, achieving a revenue and profit scale of billions of USD from a single market, industry and contract.

Along with FPT, Viettel has been successful in many countries from Asia, Africa to Latin America. Viettel Group has made 5G network equipment and high-tech weapons. Many small and medium-sized IT companies have targeted foreign markets since their inception, such as NTQ Solution, SmartOCS, RikkeiSoft, OMI, VMO... MOR Software, Savvycom have grown twice as much, CMC Global has grown 70% in the world market.

According to Minister Nguyen Manh Hung, going abroad is to compete with the best. This is the way for us to become excellent, to have the ability to compete internationally, and because of having the ability to compete internationally, we can survive long-term in the country. Going abroad is also to protect Vietnam. Thus, Vietnamese IT enterprises have been and are carrying out the mission of helping Vietnam become a dragon, a tiger, and a developed country with high income by 2045.
