With 85.4% of the vote, former Chairman of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) Lee Jae-myung in South Korea was re-elected for a second consecutive term at the party's National Congress on August 18.

This is the first time in 24 years since the late President Kim Dae-jung that a person who held the position of Chairman of a major political party in South Korea has been reappointed.
Mr. Lee Jae-myung received 85.4% of the final vote at the DP National Convention held on the afternoon of August 18 at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, marking the highest level of support for a leader of this party at the national convention.
Mr. Lee Jae-myung won overwhelmingly against former Minister of the Interior Kim Doo-gwan, who only received 12.12% of the vote.
In his victory speech, Mr. Lee Jae-myung proposed to hold a meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to solve the country's urgent problems, including economic recovery and ensuring people's livelihoods.
At the same time, the new DP Chairman also proposed to hold a meeting between representatives of the ruling People's Power Party (PPP) and the DP to discuss important agendas in the National Assembly.
President Yoon's office left open the possibility of a meeting, but said normalizing the operation of the National Assembly should be a top priority.
Mr. Lee Jae-myung is considered the leading candidate of the DP in the next Korean presidential election in 2027. He is also the one who narrowly lost to President Yoon Suk Yeol in the Korean presidential election in 2022.
