On June 20, in response to a reporter's question asking for Vietnam's opinion on the Philippines' recent submission of the Outer Continental Shelf Limits Report in the East Sea to the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam Pham Thu Hang stated:
Coastal States that are members of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982) have the right to determine the outer limits of their extended continental shelf in accordance with the relevant provisions of UNCLOS 1982.
However, when submitting the outer limits of the continental shelf, a coastal State must respect the legitimate rights and interests of other coastal States with opposite or adjacent coasts.
Accordingly, Vietnam reserves all its rights and interests under international law, especially UNCLOS 1982, and is willing to discuss with the Philippines to seek and reach a solution that suits the interests of both countries.
On this occasion, Vietnam once again affirms its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos in accordance with international law and its legitimate rights over Vietnam's maritime zones, established in accordance with the 1982 UNCLOS.
