Currently, the province has more than 616 thousand hectares of forest land (natural forest area is nearly 87%). The southern area of the province, especially Ngoc Hoi, Dak To, Sa Thay, Ia H'Drai districts, is warned to be at very high risk of fire, with a forest area at risk of more than 148,000 hectares. The central area including Dak Ha, Kon Ray districts, Kon Tum city is also forecast to be at high risk of fire, with an area of about 30,000 hectares. To date, the province has recorded 1 fire in a planted forest that has not yet become a forest in Tu Mo Rong district with a damaged area of about 16.35 hectares.
Mr. Nguyen Van Nam, Head of the Forest Protection Department, said that propaganda work to raise people's awareness of the risk of forest fires and their sense of responsibility for forest protection has been and is being promoted. Burning of vegetation in dry weather conditions is strictly prohibited, and people's use of fire near forest areas is closely monitored.
The Department has established a Monitoring and Operation Center to continuously update and issue timely warnings. Forest rangers have increased patrols and control of key areas at high risk of fire, and arranged 24/7 staff to be ready to handle fire situations as soon as they arise.
According to Mr. Nam, in order for PCCCR to be effective, it requires not only determination from the authorities but also cooperation and a heightened sense of responsibility from the community. People need to be more proactive in protecting the forest, and absolutely do not light fires in or near the forest during the dry season.
