DTO - From the end of 2024 until now, the flu epidemic situation in Vietnam has tended to increase, especially in the northern provinces. In Dong Thap, in January 2025, the flu epidemic situation showed signs of a slight increase compared to the same period in 2024, and measles is at risk of increasing. Therefore, people need to proactively implement disease prevention measures to protect the health of adults and children in the family.

Children get flu vaccinations at the provincial Center for Disease Control.

Effectively implement epidemic prevention and control measures

According to the provincial Center for Disease Control (KSBT), the weather in winter and spring with cold, dry and arid air creates favorable conditions for the flu virus to develop. For the elderly, children, people with underlying diseases and weakened immune systems, the risk of getting sick is high. Influenza is an acute infectious disease with symptoms of fever, headache, muscle pain, fatigue, runny nose, sore throat and cough. The main causative agents are influenza A (H3N2), influenza A (H1N1), influenza B and influenza C viruses. The disease is highly contagious, through the respiratory tract, small droplets of saliva or nasal secretions from sneezing, coughing. Usually the disease is mild and recovers within 2-7 days, but for children, the elderly, especially those with chronic heart, lung, kidney, metabolic diseases, anemia or immunodeficiency... the disease can progress more severely, is susceptible to complications and can lead to death. In addition to the flu, adults and children with weak immune systems are susceptible to respiratory diseases.

In January 2025, the whole province recorded 492 cases of influenza, a slight increase compared to the same period last year (487 cases, an increase of 5 cases). Regarding measles, from the beginning of 2025 to February 12, 2025, the whole province recorded 491 cases of rash fever suspected of measles, of which 14 samples were sent to the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City for testing and all tested positive for measles. The group of rash fever cases suspected of measles from 3 to 10 years old had the highest number of cases, accounting for 34.01% (167 cases). Although the province has implemented an expanded vaccination campaign, according to the health sector, while waiting for community immunity to be achieved, the number of rash fever cases suspected of measles may still be recorded at a high level in the first quarter of 2025. According to Dong Thap General Hospital, from January 2025 to February 17, 2025, the hospital received and treated 228 measles cases.

To prevent and control influenza, measles and respiratory diseases, the Department of Health has issued a document requesting provincial departments, branches and sectors to coordinate with the health sector to communicate measures to prevent and control influenza, measles and respiratory diseases to protect public health. The Department of Health requests the Provincial Center for Disease Control to be the focal point to monitor the development of the epidemic in the province, neighboring areas and nationwide; promptly advise the Department of Health to deploy effective measures to prevent and control epidemics, thoroughly handle outbreaks, and prevent the epidemic from spreading in the community. Medical examination and treatment facilities ensure the admission, emergency care and treatment of patients; strictly implement infection control, prevention and control in medical examination and treatment facilities and ensure logistics, drugs, vaccines, equipment and human resources to meet treatment requirements. For the District and City People's Committees, pay attention to directing local health care, ensuring funding sources, mobilizing the participation of political and social organizations at all levels to effectively implement epidemic prevention and control measures, especially vaccination against measles in the area...

Take good personal protective measures

According to Master Nguyen Thanh Xuan - Head of the Department of Prevention of Infectious Diseases - Parasites, Insects (Provincial Center for Disease Control), currently, the Provincial Center for Disease Control is urgently deploying propaganda materials to District and City Health Centers and Health Stations in the province to raise people's awareness of measles prevention and control; requesting localities to promote the role of Health Stations, sectors, local political and social organizations in propaganda work on measles epidemics, disease prevention measures and mobilizing people to get vaccinated. At the same time, the Provincial Center for Disease Control advises the Department of Health to develop a plan to implement a measles vaccination campaign for children from 6 to under 9 months old and to vaccinate and catch up on measles-rubella vaccines for children from 1 to 10 years old, ensuring widespread vaccination coverage. Establish an epidemiological surveillance system from the provincial to the communal level to promptly detect and handle measles outbreaks in the community. Strengthen screening and mobilize children of vaccination age; ensure safe, timely and complete vaccination to improve disease prevention effectiveness.

To proactively prevent and combat influenza, measles and respiratory diseases, Master Nguyen Thanh Xuan recommends that people need to increase their resistance by maintaining a nutritious diet, supplementing vitamins and minerals, combined with regular physical activity to improve the immune system. Implement personal protective measures such as: wearing masks at medical facilities, public places, crowded places; regularly washing hands with clean water, soap or hand sanitizer; rinsing mouth and throat with mouthwash; avoiding touching eyes, nose, mouth; covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing to limit the spread of viruses. In particular, avoid contact with people with symptoms of respiratory diseases such as: cough, fever, shortness of breath; when showing signs of illness, go to the nearest medical facility for timely consultation, examination and treatment.

In addition, people need to proactively get vaccinated against influenza every year, especially for high-risk groups, including medical staff, children aged 6-8 months, people with chronic diseases (lung disease, congenital heart disease, heart failure, diabetes, immunodeficiency...) and people over 65 years old. Vaccinate against measles/rubella (for children, the first dose at 9 months old, the second dose at 18 months old); those who have never been vaccinated against measles before should get an additional dose to ensure good immunity against measles.
