In the past few days, due to storm No. 4, the Len River water rose rapidly, flooding the two villages of Chue Cau and Binh Lam (Yen Son commune) and Tuong Lac sub-area (Ha Trung town) in Ha Trung district, Thanh Hoa province, causing the houses of more than 700 households to be deeply submerged in water.

Chue Cau village is located right outside the Len river dike, with more than 100 households flooded. The households here mainly farm and raise aquatic products. When the water rose, the entire 15 hectares of fish ponds of the people were lost.

Sitting absentmindedly in a makeshift shack on the dike, Mr. Le Dang Hai (born in 1976, Chue Cau village) said that his family has a farm of about 2 hectares. Of which, more than 1 hectare is used for fish ponds, the rest is used for pig, chicken and duck farms.

“On the night of September 22 and early morning of September 23, the Len River rose very quickly. I thought that like every year, the water would only reach the edge of the pond, so I used a net to prevent the fish from escaping. Who would have thought that in the blink of an eye, the water would almost reach the roof of the house, and my family’s entire 1-hectare fish pond would be lost,” Mr. Hai said sadly.

According to Mr. Hai, it has been about ten years since the floodwaters rose this high. When the water rose, the family only had time to bring more than 500 chickens to the dike. Because of the worry of saving the chickens, the family could only clean up a few things in the house.

“This flood means my family has lost everything. The family’s pig farm of hundreds of pigs died last June due to an epidemic, with estimated losses of more than 700 million VND. The family was relying on the fish pond to recover, but it was also swept away by the flood, with estimated losses of about 150 million VND,” Mr. Hai said sadly.

Like Mr. Hai, Mr. Pham Van Trinh's family (Chue Cau village) said that his family has about 1.2 hectares of fish pond. His whole family's life depends on the fish pond, which brings in an annual income of 120-150 million VND. Now it is considered a total loss.

Mr. Hai said that up to now, the water has receded about 1 meter but he still cannot return home.

“Now we just hope the water recedes quickly so we can clean up and resume production soon. We really hope that the authorities will pay attention and provide disinfectants to limit the spread of pathogens,” said Mr. Trinh.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nhan, Chairman of Yen Son Commune People's Committee, said that the commune has two villages, Chue Cau and Binh Lam, located outside the Len River dike, which were completely flooded. The total number of flooded households is 513 (Binh Lam village has 399 households, Chue Cau village has 114 households).

According to Mr. Nhan, on September 22, when the Len River water level rose, the commune's disaster prevention command mobilized all forces to support people in affected villages, evacuating people and property to safe areas. However, the people's aquaculture ponds were not able to handle the situation.

“Chue Cau village has more than 15 hectares of aquaculture, estimated damage of nearly 2 billion VND, not including other damages. Currently, the flood water is receding, we are sending forces and organizations to help people clean their houses and spray disinfectants to prevent disease outbreaks,” Mr. Nhan informed.
